For all children-even those with special needs-summer is a time to learn new skills, meet new friends, play, experience new environments, learn to trust in new adults, and develop self-confidence. At this fair, parents and guardians of children with special needs can connect with experts from more than 70 summer programs, find out about their child's right to reasonable accommodations, learn how to prepare kids for camp.
Remember that the Americans with Disabilities Act supports your child's right to be included in mainstream programs. The law says that your child with special needs is entitled to be given "reasonable accommodations." You are the best person to tell the camp what those accommodation might be.
If at all possible, try to visit a camp while it is in session to see if it is really appropriate for your child. If you can?t do that, ask the camp for a link to a video about the program. You can also speak to other parents about their experiences with camp.
Resources for Children with Special Needs creates bright futures for the city's at-risk children and youth with special needs by empowering their parents.
The organization provides personal, knowledgeable, and compassionate direct assistance to 2,500 families each year, and over 200 workshops and information events for over 3,000 people.
