Click here for the latest events.08-06-2013 12:00:00 08-06-2013 12:00:00 America/New_York 6th Annual LIC Bike Parade | 11am-5pm In preparation for the parade children and families can repair their bikes with Recycle-A-Bicycle; get free helmets and fittings with the NYC Department of Transportation; and decorate their bikes with Socrates artists from 11am-3pm. The parade begins at 3pm along Vernon Blvd., and finally, the day of cycling fun concludes with a Waterfront Celebration at Queensbridge Park. And for the first time, this year, participants can literally let their creativity roll when they compete in the Kinetic Sculpture Challenge. Enter your moveable, human-powered sculpture-vehicle and parade it down Vernon Boulevard, with awards for Best Engineering, Best Art, and Best Costume. See website for details. KINETIC SCULPTURE CHALLENGE RULES 1.Sculptures must be vehicles ? they must have wheels or moveable legs, and be able to move forward, stop and turn. No pushing, towing, or walking with sculptures. 2.Sculptures must be human powered. No stored energy, motors, or electricity. 3.You must be able to maintain a slow 3mph bicycle pace. 4.Sculptures may be decorated in a recognizable theme, or unrecognizable, as long as it is impressive! 5.SAFETY=FUN FOR EVERYONE AWARD CATEGORIES ?Best Engineering Award ? Venue Description: In 1986, a coalition of artists and community members led by Mark di Suvero decided to retake an abandoned riverside landfill that was being used as an illegal dumpsite and make it into an open space for art and artists. Since then, Socrates Sculpture Park has become an internationally renowned outdoor museum. It is today the only spot in the New York metropolitan area specifically designed to allow artists the opportunity create and showcase large-scale work in an environment that encourages interaction between artists, artworks, and the public.
Since 2006, the park has been expanding its Community Works Initiative program, which offers employment and job training to area residents, including those of the nearby Astoria projects. Participants learn landscaping and basic horticulture skills as they tend the park gardens. At the end of the program, all participants have new marketable skills and knowledge of the resources and cultural events that the park has available for the community and visitors. Among the events and activities that the park offers are kite flights, fitness programs, workshops, the LIC Bike Parade, Summer Solstice, Makers Market, outdoor cinema, an annual Earth Day event, and the Halloween Harvest Festival. In July and August, there are free summer outdoor art-making workshops with a variety of topics.
