The turkey is a the main course but the bird was once proposed by Ben Franklin as the National symbol. While the bird was never adopted as Franklin proposed, it was represented by a number of visual artists from the ancient Maya, John James Audubon, Claude Monet, Norman Rockwell and John Currin just to name a few.
