This summer Congregation Beth Elohim is offering a dual language group at their summer camp, CBE Kids Summer Day Camp. They have had positive reactions to their Hebrew-Immersion program, Keshet, which is offered during the year, and want to enhance it by offering a similar option for the summer.

“We feel this would encourage a mutual respect and understanding of Israel culture,” explains Bobbie Finkelstein, director of Youth Programs. The other goal is to allow children to experience learning a second language, something they are at a prime age to accomplish and something that they really love, says Finkelstein.

Campers at CBE are usually divided into groups by grade level, but depending on the level of interest and enrollment for the dual language program, groups may be combined. There will be one native Hebrew speaking counselor and one English speaking counselor per group. “Our aim is to create an atmosphere where as much Hebrew can be spoken as possible,” says Finkelstein. Some specialty staff may also be native Hebrew speakers, and the camp will incorporate Israeli culture and Hebrew language into all activities.

The program is inclusive and welcoming to everyone, and could be ideal for kids who already speak Hebrew at home and want to take their language skills into a more diverse environment, yet equally suitable for kids who have never spoken Hebrew before. The camp has high hopes for the program, bolstered by the success of the Keshet program. “The dual language program will warm the heart of kids’ parents and grandparents across the generations,” says Senior Rabbi Andy Bachman.

CBE Kids Summer Day Camp is located at 274 Garfield Place, Park Slope. For more information email Bobbie Finkelstein at [email protected].
