Portledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center recently co-sponsored the first annual Create Something GreatSM Recycled Sculpture Contest. This contest was a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists across Long Island. Students were encouraged to build sculptures designed around the theme of animals, insects, birds, and reptiles made out of recycled and/or reusable materials. Curiosity about art, wildlife, and environmental issues shined through in every entry.
Portledge School held a reception on Saturday, April 9, at which the general public was able to view the nearly 80 sculptures submitted to the contest by elementary-age students from Long Island schools. Award winners were announced in three age categories based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials. All participants received a certificate of participation and each winner received a gift card for art supplies ($100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place).

First place: Joshua Yoder (Glen Cove)
Second: Jordan Dyer (Bayville)
Third: Laura Yardeni (Brookville)
