Author Gina Otto will sign copies of her newly-released children’s book, Cassandra’s Angel. The story recounts the struggles of a young girl who manages to overcome peer pressure and eventually learns the value of self-confidence and self-worth. Otto, an award-winning writer and advocate for children, has initiated a global movement to encourage and inspire children and adults alike to recognize and embrace their own special gifts. Harry Potter Halloween workshopHave a Harry Potter Halloween

Owls and snakes and frogs, oh my! Children ages 5-14 and accompanying adults will be spellbound by a visit with some of the animals featured in the Harry Potter series at the Center for Science Teaching and Learning’s Amazing Animals exhibit.

Once they’ve worked up a hearty Hogwarts appetite, set them loose in the Harry Potter Halloween Workshop with LilChefs.com, where they’ll conjure up ghoulish goodies and puzzling potions. A prize will be given for the best character lookalike. Advance payment and registration required. October 22. 12-2pm or 3-5pm. Call for pricing.

Goodnight Moon and the Runaway BunnyClassic Storybooks on Stage

Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny, two classic stories, come to life on stage with engaging puppetry and imagery. Goodnight Moon is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while The Runaway Bunny‘s pretend tale of leaving home evokes reassuring responses from his loving mom. October 23, 11am and 2pm. $18.

Spooky Fest Long IslandA Spooky Festival

The woods are alive with the sounds of…Spooky Fest. Everything is transformed and comes alive at night. See who’s lurking along the Spooky Walk — if you dare. Admission includes Halloween craft activities and more. October 28-30, 6:30-9:30pm. $5; $10 children.

Scarecrow at Old Westbury GardensScarecrows in the Garden

It’s a bird! It’s a man! It’s a scarecrow! You won’t believe your eyes at the ingenuity of these Scarecrows in the Garden. This innovative outdoor exhibition is not just for the birds. Created by individuals, families, community groups, and corporations, the display will be on view through October 30. 10am-5pm daily, except Tuesdays. $10; $8 seniors; $5 children 7-17; free children 6 and younger.
