NYMetroParents Receives 11 Excellence Awards from Parenting Media Association

NEW YORK, NY (March 5, 2012)Parenting Media Association presented NYMetroParents, a division of Davler Media Group and the largest publisher of regional parenting publications on the East Coast, with 11 Excellence Awards at the 2011 Editorial and Design Awards Competition banquet on March 3 in San Antonio, TX. These 11 accolades set a record high for NYMetroParents and serve as proof of its continued dedication to excellence; the publishing group took home 10 awards at last year’s PMA banquet.

Parenting Media Association 2012 Award Winner Editorial and Design Awards CompetitionNYMetroParents includes monthly titles Big Apple Parent, Brooklyn Parent, Fairfield Parent, Nassau Parent, Queens Parent, Rockland Parent, Suffolk Parent, Westchester Parent, and the biannual ancillary publication NYMetro Special Parent.

Parenting Media Association (formerly Parenting Publications of America) is a national trade association of regional parenting publications. PMA’s Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography, and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers, and designers at parenting newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

A panel of 22 independent judges, who drew upon significant professional experience, reviewed entries to choose the winners in each category. “The quality of the entries continues to rise,” noted Prof. Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, who coordinates the competition. “Some of the design categories, including feature and publication design, are magnificent. In writing, there are dozens of writing entries, particularly in the column categories, that are outstanding, and the competition is stiff.”

“The purpose of the PMA awards competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in parenting publications,” said PMA Executive Director C. James Dowden.

This year, more than 840 entries were reviewed by a panel of 22 judges, and PMA changed from a bronze-silver-gold awards system to finalists with one winner in each category (except General Excellence, which retained the three-part awards system).

“I am so very proud of our edit and design team for their dedication to providing excellent, valuable content to parents in our area every month,” said Dawn Roode, editorial director of NYMetroParents. “Every individual contributes in an important way, and each deserves congratulations on these awards. It is most gratifying to know that the recognition comes from the independent judges at the University of Missouri, who under Daryl Moen’s leadership also coordinates three other national contests for professional journalism organizations.”

According to David Miller, CEO of Davler Media Group, “The awards are testament to our ongoing commitment to print. We strive to provide the best and most comprehensive array of resources for local parents throughout the greater New York metro area, and our publications are a proven source for that material. Winning these awards — and the fact that we were recognized even more than last year — is an impressive accomplishment.”

Added Roode: “It might be easy to overlook, but our team was not only recognized with 11 awards, but we were named finalists in 12 other categories. That is an unprecedented achievement for us, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

The PMA Awards

Open to all member publications, the competition was broken into three circulation divisions: 30,000 or fewer, 30,001 to 54,999, and 55,000 or more. Members competed to win in 20 editorial categories, 17 design categories, four ancillary publication categories, two website categories, and five general excellence categories.

At the conference, NYMetroParents received 11 PMA awards for editorial and design excellence in the 55,000 or more circulation division, including:

About NYMetro Parents

Following the success of the first NYC parenting resource book, “Big Apple Baby,” Big Apple Parent was launched in 1985; it is now the largest parenting publication on the East Coast. Filling the need parents had for hyper-local content, NYMetroParents created seven additional monthly magazines: Queens Parent premiered in 1995; Westchester Parent in 2000; Brooklyn Parent in 2004; Rockland Parent in 2007; Fairfield Parent in 2008; and Nassau Parent and Suffolk Parent in 2009. Today the total monthly circulation for all eight magazines totals more than 400,000.

In October 2011, NYMetroParents launched its first-ever Special Parent magazine, a biannual publication dedicated to families of children with special needs in our areas. The next issue will be published in April 2012.

After several years as the New York City affiliate for Disney’s family.com, NYMetroParents launched its own parenting web resource in early 1999. NYMetroParents.com allows users to search for family-related businesses and services in each of our regions, and to locate any story from the archives.
