The awards recognize K-12 schools that have the most successful math and science educational programs in the country. Honored schools provide a rich, rigorous science and/or mathematics curriculum by incorporating hands-on investigative experiences that prepare students for future jobs.

Ossining received the Star Innovator Award, which came with prizes totaling $100,000 and an additional $15,000 grant from the Intel Foundation.

Since 1988, Ossining High School has implemented a project-based science program that fosters student involvement through an extensive network of mentoring and community partnerships. All students are encouraged to enroll in the school’s scientific research course, gain hands-on experience in STEM projects, and consider the possibility of a career in science. Through project-based instruction, students act as scientists, working both individually and collaboratively, and reaching out to experts in their field to further learning. All students are also encouraged to present their work in an annual symposium.

The Intel Foundation and sponsoring companies distributed $560,000 in cash grants and awards to the winning schools. Each winning school at a minimum won an estimated $75,000 in a combination of cash grants from the Intel Foundation and an award package that includes curriculum materials, professional development resources, and hardware and software programs. The goal of the awards is to spread awareness about the success schools can achieve by cultivating a hands-on science and math environment.
