Spring Break Activities at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens

No need to get antsy at home during the upcoming vacation. The Museum of the Moving Image is hosting Spring Recess Family Fun, with full days of film screenings, hands-on workshops for children, and special demonstrations in the galleries. Events include:

 

Higglety Pigglety Pop!; Spike Jonze short film; Jennie the Sealyham Terrier; There Must Be More to Life filmDaily screenings of Higglety Pigglety Pop! in the Tut’s Fever movie palace. Co-produced by Spike Jonze and featuring the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker, the film, also known as There Must Be More to Life, brings Jennie the Sealyham Terrier to the screen with live action puppets and animation. Viewers can watch Jennie pursue her dream to become the star of the World Mother Goose Theater in this 23-minute movie. Hourly shows beginning at 11am; last show starts at 4pm. All ages. Included with museum admission.

 

Moving Pictures Workshop: Children discover why moving images move and make their own Thaumatropes – 19th-century optical toys – to take home. Daily at 11:30am. Ages 6-12. $5 materials fee per child. Space is limited; register at the admissions desk.

 

Stop-Motion Animation Workshop: Children learn about the technique of stop-motion animation and create their own animated movies, which are shared online. Daily at 1pm and 2:30pm. Ages 10 and older. $10 materials fee per child. Space is limited; register at the admissions desk.

 

Gallery Demonstrations:

Kinetoscope (12:30pm and 3:30pm): Watch a film on Thomas Edison’s movie-viewing machine.

Sound Editing (1pm, 2:30pm, and 4pm): Learn how the soundtrack to Titanic was designed, mixed, and layered.

Video Game Technology (1:30pm and 3:30pm): See how video games were invented, and play popular historic console games.
