Candy Chiu and Thomas Bergeron, musicians and teachers who studied at Yale University, have opened The Greenwich Music Lessons, a teaching studio in their Greenwich basement offering piano, percussion, and trumpet instruction.

Bergeron, a professional trumpet player, is on the faculty at Williams College and has taught at Amherst College and Bennington College. He has experience teaching all
skill levels.

Leading the piano and percussion classes, Chiu, a Taiwan native with fluency in Mandarin, was an artist-in-residence at the Educational Center of the Arts in New Haven, as well as an artist in the Music in Schools initiative.

The two consider themselves lucky to be able to spread their love of music among kids, and work to accommodate students’ budgets when it comes to cost of lessons. “We are a local friendly neighborhood place,” Bergeron says. “We have a personal connection with the students and their parents.”

Children can begin percussion or piano lessons as young as 4 years old, but Bergeron encourages burgeoning trumpet players to wait until 4th grade, due to the physical nature of trumpet playing. The 45- to 60-minute percussion lessons can be taught in small groups as well as individually. “We are open to many different situations,” Bergeron says. “We want to work within everyone’s means as much as we can.”

The studio is located at 43 Glenville Street. To inquire about trumpet lessons, call 413-221-9504. To inquire about percussion and piano lessons, call 443-956-1095.
