Skate Day - New York Hall of Science
April 20, 2013 - Flushing

Kids can design their own skateboard, experiment with ramps, and learn the fundamentals of skateboarding with a Go Skate pro skateboarder. Thirty-minute, Beginner and Advanced Beginner sessions offered. Thirty-minute Skate Clinics with Go Skate will alternate between Beginner and Advanced Beginner sessions. Full program includes: Design Your Own Skateboard from noon to 4 pm. Use stencils, air brush and taping techniques to design your ideal skateboard deck on paper boards cut to scale. Nerdby Derby from noon to 4 pm. The Nerdy Derby is a miniature car building and racing competition inspired by the Cub Scouts' Pinewood Derby. Skate Clinics (see times below). Learn the fundamentals of skateboarding, including safety and stunts, with a Go Skate pro skateboarder in these 30-minute sessions. Space is limited. Beginner Sessions at 1, 2 and 3pm. In beginner sessions, participants will learn basic techniques including how to stand on a skateboard, where to place your feet, how to push, turn and balance the board, and how to fall and stop properly. Advanced Beginner Sessions at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30pm. In advanced beginner sessions, the instructor will assess students' knowledge of fundamental skateboard techniques. Basic tricks and techniques will be taught, including an inntroduction to "How To Do An Ollie." All ages are welcome.

This well-known and nationally touring performer from the PBS KIDS Emmy Award-winning show "Between the Lions" infuses a fresh sound into children's music with high-energy shows that get kids to jump, play, sing, and dance through a collection of hip, exuberant songs with roots in reggae, world music and rock and roll. Aaron and NYC members of his One World Chorus will also sing new songs from the acclaimed CD Welcome to the Village!, a globe-shrinking collection of songs featuring the voices of hundreds of children from New York, Los Angeles, Portland and a school near Nairobi, Kenya. With the One World Chorus project, he hopes to make the world a little smaller. "When kids sing together, I hope that they enjoy sharing the gift of music and learning a valuable discipline that can be used to promote positive change in the world," he says.

Artist Patrick Dougherty and a team of volunteers constructed a monumental woven-wood sculpture in honor of Brooklyn Botanic Garden's centennial. The result, large-scale sculptures made from sticks and saplings, is an organic structure that changes over time as the materials settle and decay.

Tree house architect Roderick Romero has created a whimsical, inhabitable sculpture using wood from trees felled by Hurricane Sandy. This "tree house" will be part open-air classroom, part viewing point, and part artwork. Created specifically for BBG, it will invite visitors of all ages to experience the Garden in a new way.

World Brooklyn - Brooklyn Children's Museum

Kids can visit examples of stores they might find in some of Brooklyn's ethnic pockets: a Chinese stationary store, a Mexican bakery, a West African import store, to name a few, which are modeled after real Brooklyn businesses. There's also an international grocery store and a replica of the famous L&B Spumoni pizzeria from Bensonhurst.

ElectriCity: Powering New York's Rails - New York Transit Museum
