Come Out and Play Field Day - Governors Island

Every summer at the Come Out & Play Festival (COAP), thousands of people play original games in public spaces across New York. This year's festival will feature Come Out & Play After Dark night games at South Street Seaport, and Field Day and Family Day on Governors Island. The 2013 Come Out & Play Festival kicks off with Come Out & Play After Dark, an evening of night games on Friday, July 12 at South Street Seaport. After Dark transforms the area around South Street Seaport into a big playground through a mixture of projections, installation games and street games. The evening will include everything from big games of zombie tag down alleyways to Field Frogger, a real-world version of the arcade classic. On Saturday, July 13, Come Out & Play will take over the Governors Island Parade Grounds for a day full of original Field and Family Games. Now in its third year, Field Day showcases original field games, sports and social games. Some games make use of new technology like smartphones, and some rely on old-fashioned tech like rubber balls. But each game offers new ways to play and have fun. Games that will be played at this year's Come Out and Play Festival include: Adventure Squad versus the Sky Pirates, Crossfire and Kung Fu Flamingoes. A descriptive list of games can be found below. Family Day offers games designed specifically for families and children. Brought to the festival by ESI Design, Family Day features an immersive, interactive time travel environment that leads to games set in a variety of time periods, from the dawn of the universe to the distant future. In addition to playing original games, families will encounter wacky time travel agents, discover chronological paradoxes and help prevent threats to the space-time-continuum. Games include Spaghetti Standoff, Super Bacon Grab 2, and Battle of the Cardboard Clads. A complete list of Family Day games online at comeoutandplay.org. The New York Transit Museum announced the first session of "Straphangers' Hangout," a new weekly program for 3-5 year-olds with special needs. Through stories, movement, and art making, Straphangers' Hangout will create a fun and welcoming environment for the museum's youngest special needs visitors. Different books, songs and art projects will be offered each week, along with opportunities to explore interactive, kid-friendly exhibits about electricity, subways and buses in New York City. Participants will also have the chance to experience the vintage subway car collection on the museum's platform level. Caregivers participate along with their children and are an integral part of the program. Nancy Schwartz, the museum's special needs educator, will lead the activities, creating a comfortable space for special needs families to explore the world of public transit and have a blast at the same time. Each session costs $10 and participants can sign up for as many or as few as they like. The program runs weekly from July 9 through Aug. 13. Straphangers' Hangout is all about embracing special needs families in a cultural environment where they feel welcome.
