Children's language skills develop rapidly, absorbing everything they hear. Why not introduce another language to your child while they are young and receptive to new things? Explore basic themes in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Workshops are drop in and do not require advance sign up. The series will explore a different theme each week (numbers, fruits, animals, etc). A class project and song will be used each week to reinforce learning.

Read to a Dog - North Hills Library

Children can select a book to read aloud to Jami the therapy dog, a certified therapy pet partner. Reading aloud improves literacy skills, and animals are ideal reading companions because they create a relaxed, comfortable and safe environment. Space is limited and available first come, first served.

Zumba for Kids - Forest Hils

Children ages 5 and up can explore dance and movement to the sound of international music with Lauren Singer. Steps will be simplified so that all ages can participate. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a towel and bottle of water. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

Tablao Flamenco 2013 - The Chian Federation

May flowers aren?t the only great thing that April brings. Enjoy an evening of dance. Under the direction of Gabriela Granados, Tablao Flamenco features live performances of Flamenco and other styles of Spanish dance and music. The cabaret-type presentation and atmosphere replicates what is experienced in the flamenco clubs (or ?tablaos?) of Spain.

Cultural Crossroads: Korea Meets Greece - Flushing Town Hall

A little mixing up can be fun! 2 cultures come together on 1 stage in this new series with an open dance floor. Dance lessons at 7pm, followed by 2 bands & a musical jam. The Von Ku Pak Drum & Dance Troupe perform Korean music & dance dressed in traditional regalia followed by Yanni Papastefanou and his ensemble in an evening of traditional music & dance from the Greek Isles.

Storybook Discovery Days for Children - The Voelker Orth Museum and Garden

Come to the parlor for a special treat. Dr. Marge Hendler's reading series for young children cultivates the joys of reading. The session includes an art or nature activity.

Skate Day - New York Hall of Science
April 20, 2013 - Flushing

Kids can design their own skateboard, experiment with ramps, and learn the fundamentals of skateboarding with a Go Skate pro skateboarder. Thirty-minute, Beginner and Advanced Beginner sessions offered. Thirty-minute Skate Clinics with Go Skate will alternate between Beginner and Advanced Beginner sessions. Full program includes: Design Your Own Skateboard from noon to 4 pm. Use stencils, air brush and taping techniques to design your ideal skateboard deck on paper boards cut to scale. Nerdby Derby from noon to 4 pm. The Nerdy Derby is a miniature car building and racing competition inspired by the Cub Scouts' Pinewood Derby. Skate Clinics (see times below). Learn the fundamentals of skateboarding, including safety and stunts, with a Go Skate pro skateboarder in these 30-minute sessions. Space is limited. Beginner Sessions at 1, 2 and 3pm. In beginner sessions, participants will learn basic techniques including how to stand on a skateboard, where to place your feet, how to push, turn and balance the board, and how to fall and stop properly. Advanced Beginner Sessions at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30pm. In advanced beginner sessions, the instructor will assess students' knowledge of fundamental skateboard techniques. Basic tricks and techniques will be taught, including an inntroduction to "How To Do An Ollie." All ages are welcome.

Rad Workshop with Jon Santiago - New York Hall of Science

Artist Tools: Hands, Eyes, Ears - Noguchi Museum

Parents can learn strategies for engaging their children during museum visits while exploring art materials and The Noguchi Museum galleries as a family. This program is for families with children ages 2-4. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Earth Day Beach Cleanup - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Families can show their love for Mother Earth. Celebrate the upcoming holiday by helping to clean up marine debris. This simple act protects wildlife and people too. Dress for the weather, wear long pants and long sleeves, sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves. Groups welcome. Pre-registration required.

Family Art Project: Flags and Kites for Earth Day - Wave Hill

Visiting Artist Miwa Koizumi, who in her own work repurposes found plastic bottles to dazzling effect, will show families how to make simple kites and festive flags out of colorful plastic bags to celebrate Earth Day. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until 12pm.

Children's Carnival - Queens County Farm Museum

Enjoy an good ole-fashioned carnival in the apple orchard. Carnival rides, midway games, and prizes, hayrides, and children's entertainment, and more. Admission per person includes entry to the farm grounds and carnival rides at no additonal charge. Note: height rules apply at all rides.

Star Safari at APEC – The Evening Spring Sky - Alley Pond Environmental Center

Join Astronomer Mark Freilich for an exciting evening of star gazing. Understand and appreciate the mystery and beauty of the spring constellations during an indoor lecture (with hand outs). Then venture outdoors for a guided star safari to learn about and view the moon up close. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes. To ensure the quality of all astronomy workshops, the venue reserves the right to cancel if the weather forecast calls for rain.

Think that bugs and worms are yucky or amazing?, actually, they can be both. Read "Yucky Worms!" by Vivian French along with bug- and Earth Day- themed books with Karyn Mooney to learn the importance of sharing the earth with our invertebrate friends as well as ways to take care of the planet. After reading together, kids will enjoy searching for bugs and plants during a scavenger hunt in the Victorian garden.

The Orchid Show - The New York Botanical Garden

The 11th annual exhibition celebrates this storied flower in all its amazing forms with thousands of brilliantly colored orchids. The largest exhibition of its kind in the United States also offers insight into caring for orchids, music from around the world, and a gorgeous setting for evening cocktails. Elaborate and kaleidoscopic displays throughout the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory explode with orchids in an amazing array of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. Tens of thousands of blooms -- blue and purple vandas, green and yellow cymbidiums, delicate pink and white moth orchids, and more -- stand out amid stately palms and exotic tropical leaves. This year, The Orchid Show is designed by Francisca P. Coelho, Vivian and Edward Merrin Vice President for Glasshouses and Exhibitions at the Garden. Coehlho is best known for her plantsmanship and key role in the design and development of high profile shows in the Conservatory. There will be demonstrations, Q&A's, guided tours, lectures, evening events, and classes. An All-Garden Pass includes admission to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Everett Children's Adventure Garden, Rock Garden, Tram Tour, and more. Through April 22.

Spectacle: The Music Video - Museum of the Moving Image
Through June 16, 2013 - Astoria

This groundbreaking exhibition explores music video as an important and influential art form in contemporary culture and is the most comprehensive museum exhibition on music videos presented to date. Spectacle highlights the form's place at the forefront of creative technology, its role in pushing the boundaries of innovative production, its important role as an experimental sandbox for filmmakers, and its lasting effects on popular culture globally. The exhibition features more than 300 videos, presented alongside artifacts and interactive experiences, and will be installed in the Museum's 4,000 sq.-ft. changing exhibitions gallery, amphitheater gallery, and other spaces.
