In addition to a wide range of Buddhist and Hindu deities rendered in all major media, Masterworks also highlights the museum's most notable recent acquisitions, all of which have rarely or never been exhibited. Life-size facsimiles of an entire sequence of murals from the Lukhang, the Dalai Lamas' Secret Temple near the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, provide an exceptional opportunity for viewing Himalayan art at its most lavish. The original eighteenth-century wall paintings--inaccessible to the public until the late twentieth century--uniquely depict the most esoteric of meditation and yoga practices in vivid color and detail. Created with new photographic methods by Thomas Laird and Clint Clemens, this display of large-format, high resolution pigment prints allows for even better access to the paintings than is possible in the temple itself. Their presentation at the Rubin marks the first showing in the world of prints created using this technology and also provides the first-ever opportunity outside Tibet to view full-size Tibetan murals in their relationship to portable art from the region.

SANDY RELIEF BENEFIT TOURS - Wall Street Walks
Through December 31, 2012 - New York

As the flood waters recede and downtown New York cleans up and gets back to business, we are left with many reminders of the effects of the storm. Wall Street Walks will be adding points of interest to their regular walking tours so that visitors to New York can experience the power of Hurricane Sandy themselves. The height of flood waters, the damage done to local businesses, the flooded infrastructure of downtown and the widespread recovery efforts will be highlighted at various points during each tour. Interestingly, the areas of downtown New York that were once a part of New Amsterdam in the 1600s were largely spared from the flood waters. Wall Street Walks will take visitors along the 400-year-old streets to the edges of the old coastline, far inland from the current edges of Manhattan, to point out the affected areas versus the unaffected areas. In this way, the Dutch history of New York becomes acutely relevant to the effects of Sandy as well as future storms. As a business affected by Hurricane Sandy, Wall Street Walks would like to give back to the neighborhood that supports it and makes these walking tours possible. To that end, proceeds from each Wall Street Walks walking tour through the end of this year will be donated to local relief efforts. Tickets are $25. Wall Street Walks Tour Schedule History of Wall Street + Ground Zero Tour: Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 11am; Monday & Wednesday 1pm Exploring Historic Dutch New York: Friday, Saturday & Sunday 1pm 9/11 Memorial + Wall Street Tour: Wednesday 11am Tickets available for purchase online at www.wallstreetwalks.com About Wall Street Walks Wall Street Walks provides guided walking tours of downtown Manhattan’s Financial District. With a focus on the rich history of this area, Wall Street Walks tours offer tourists and locals an insight into the financial and geopolitical history of New Amsterdam and New York. Far from a boring history lesson, Wall Street Walks tours reveal the colorful stories behind the world largest financial center, the historical significance of America’s oldest buildings, and the characters that built the city up from a Dutch outpost to the most powerful city in the world.

A white-bearded gentleman claiming to be the real Santa Claus spreads a wave of love throughout New York City, fostering camaraderie between Macy's and Gimbel's Department Stores, and convincing a divorced, cynical single mother, her somber daughter, and the entire state of New York that Santa Claus is no myth. Filled with humor, spectacle, and such wonderful songs as "This Is What I Live For," "Just Imagine," and "I Believe In Miracles," "Miracle on 34th Street" is a traditional celebration of the magic that is Christmas. A joyous, heart-warming musical is pure family entertainment! "TOPER is one of my oldest friends and a very talented guy with a very interesting life experience,” says RIME. “This show aims to tap into our life experience coming up in New York.” Best known for his explosive use of color combined with dynamic lettering and innovative characters, RIME started painting graffiti in Staten Island in 1991. He spent many years mastering his style throughout New York and New Jersey and had achieved international recognition for his distinct aesthetic by 2003. In 2005, RIME moved to Los Angeles to concentrate on fine art. It was also in 2005 that he became a member of the legendary crew MSK. This marks the first time in almost a decade that RIME will be headlining a show back in his hometown. TOPER grew up painting alongside such legends as Dash Snow (SACE), REVS, DG, SETUP, SCOPE, and of course, RIME, after the two met growing up in Staten Island. TOPER’s name has been known and respected in the New York graffiti art scene since the mid-to-late 1990s as a writer known for his distinctive New York street-motivated style, a technique he is now channeling into his fine art. 'Flying Monsters' - American Musem of Natural History, LeFrak Theater
Through January 04, 2013 - Upper West Side

"Flying Monsters" is a new giant screen adventure about the awe-inspiring world of a group of reptiles who ruled the skies about 220 million years ago. Produced by award-winning Atlantic Productions and distributed by National Geographic Entertainment, the film follows world-renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough as he sets out to uncover the truth about the enigmatic pterosaurs, who, after insects, were the first creatures to fly. Attenborough, who wrote and narrates the film, works with scientists and engineers to try and understand how and why pterosaurs flew, traveling to New Mexico's "Ghost Ranch," Big Bend National Park in Texas, Lyme Regis in the United Kingdom, an ancient pterosaur landing site in Southern France, a fossil pit in Germany where near-perfect pterosaur specimens have been found, and China's remote Liaoning Province in search of answers. How did creatures the size of giraffes with a wingspan of 45 feet fly through the air? The audience will be immersed in the world of the pterosaur and experience the enormous challenges these creatures faced to survive, let alone flourish, in prehistoric skies. The film will introduce viewers to Dimorphodon, the earliest known pterosaur with a complete fossil, Darwinopterus, which, with a lighter build than Dimorphodon, had a wingspan of 2.3-3.3 feet, Tapejara, which may have configured its body to sail across the ocean in search of prey, and Quetzalcoatlus, which, with a wingspan of 33-40 feet and an 8-foot-long beak, is the biggest known animal that has ever flown. Flying Monsters 3D won a BAFTA award in 2011 from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in the Specialist Factual category, Best 3D Program at the 2011 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, and Best Science Film from the Association of International Broadcasting. The film will screen at the museum through January 4, 2013. Entrance to the museum is included in movie ticket price.
