Jeffrey Maron: Devotion - Affirmation Arts
Through December 08, 2012 - New York

Affirmation Arts is pleased to present Jeffrey Maron: Devotion, a retrospective of Maron’s sculptural work that spans 16 years (1976—2012). The exhibition, which opens with a cocktail reception on October 11, comprises 34 unique works of copper alloy and other materials. Devotion marks the gallery’s premier solo sculptural exhibition. Jeffrey Maron’s work is self-described as “contemporary animism,” drawing on spiritual experiences to transform metals and other materials into works of art. His creative process comprises mind, body and spirit, producing pieces that have their own intrinsic energy and animistic themes. Maron’s work is characterized by paradoxes; it is tough and beautiful, religious and sensual, reminiscent of familiar symbols, yet unique. Maron states, “The activities of my hands are transformative to the materials involved in the creation of my art. My hands know how to change an image or form, into something more than just the reformed material. This necessitates the metamorphosis of the material with a specific energy and intent. This process is difficult to delegate to others. It imbues a unique character to the art that allows it to speak to the viewer's heart without the need for subsequent explanation." After receiving his M.F.A. at Washington University in 1973, Maron went on to win numerous awards including three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, and a two-year Fulbright-Hayes Grant for sculpture that allowed him to live and work in Japan where he continued to be influenced by cultures of the world dedicated to animism. Maron’s work can be found in many corporate, public and private collections. The artist lives and works in New York City. Affirmation Arts is an institution comprising an art gallery and studios that provides an anchor to the up-and-coming arts neighborhood on the west side of Manhattan. The gallery offers temporary exhibition space for curators, galleries, artists, and in-house shows. For more information about Affirmation Arts, please visit www.affirmationarts.com.

Times Square Show Revisited - Hunter College Art Galleries
Through December 08, 2012 - New York

The Hunter College Art Galleries are pleased to present Times Square Show Revisited, an in-depth look at the original Times Square Show, scheduled to debut in New York City this Fall from September 14-December 8, 2012. Times Square Show Revisited aims to explore the original exhibition's exposure of New York's burgeoning downtown artistic community in June 1980, which also marked the occasion of many developments in the field, including Jean Michel Basquiat's first appearance in an exhibition as both a painter and graffiti writer SAMO, Nan Goldin's first major presentation of what was to become her seminal Ballad of Sexual Dependency, Jenny Holzer's introduction to the possibility of working with LED lights, and the presentation of experimental works by artists including Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf among others. The Times Square Show, hailed by the Village Voice as "The First Radical Art Show of the 1980s," included some one hundred artists and sprawled across four floors and the basement of a disused massage parlor on the corner of 41st Street and 7th Avenue in New York City. In addition to experimental painting and sculpture, the exhibition incorporated music, fashion, and an ambitious program of performance and video. For many artists, such as Kiki Smith, David Hammons, and Tom Otterness, the exhibition served as a forum for the exchange of ideas, a testing-ground for work in progress, and a catalyst for exploring new artistic directions. With contributions from over 30 artists involved in the original exhibition, Times Square Show Revisited seeks to capture the essence of this historic moment of art making in New York City through a combination of art works, documentary materials, a lively public programming schedule, and a publication that can be counted as an important chronicle of the original exhibition. Curated by post-war art historian and Hunter College graduate Shawna Cooper, in association with Karli Wurzelbacher, art historian and PhD candidate at the University of Delaware, Times Square Show Revisited will be held in Hunter College's Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery. Many of the objects on view will be loaned directly by artists who participated in the 1980 Times Square Show. Jeffrey Deitch's insightful review of the original exhibition for Art in America highlighted the energetic relevance brought to bare by the artist organized exhibition; "The Times Square Show was a challenge to dealers and curators of advanced art who continue to feel that the discreet display of a few pieces of art in an elegant gallery is enough. But it was even more of a challenge to artists who think that their work stops when it leaves the studio, and who leaves its presentation to others." The Times Square Show represents a specific moment in art that paved the way for a particular dialogue in New York City especially, whose implications continue to be felt in the art world today. Times Square Show Revisited will be on view from September 14-December 8, 2012 at the Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery, 68th street and Lexington Avenue, SW corner. A special opening reception will be held on September 13 from 6-8pm. The exhibition will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue and comprehensive website with extensive interviews with the participants of the exhibition. For more information about the exhibition, please visit http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/art/galleries/galleries
