Celebrate Brooklyn! - Prospect Park Bandshell

Celebrate Brooklyn! offers a diverse season of free concerts usually on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Highlights this season include a screening of Dracula with a live performance from the Philip Glass Ensemble (July 13.), The Waterboys (July 19), They Might Be Giants (Aug. 10), and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis in a special children's concert (Jun. 8).

Straphangers' Hangout - New York Transit Museum
Through August 13, 2013 - Brooklyn Heights

The New York Transit Museum announced the first session of "Straphangers' Hangout," a new weekly program for 3-5 year-olds with special needs. Through stories, movement, and art making, Straphangers' Hangout will create a fun and welcoming environment for the museum's youngest special needs visitors. Different books, songs and art projects will be offered each week, along with opportunities to explore interactive, kid-friendly exhibits about electricity, subways and buses in New York City. Participants will also have the chance to experience the vintage subway car collection on the museum's platform level. Caregivers participate along with their children and are an integral part of the program. Nancy Schwartz, the museum's special needs educator, will lead the activities, creating a comfortable space for special needs families to explore the world of public transit and have a blast at the same time. Each session costs $10 and participants can sign up for as many or as few as they like. The program runs weekly from July 9 through Aug. 13. Straphangers' Hangout is all about embracing special needs families in a cultural environment where they feel welcome.

Summer Discovery Tuesdays - Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Preschoolers and their families can enjoy a workshop where they'll learn about plants and animals at a hands-on discovery station. There's a story time, a garden hunt, and the chance to take home a plant or make a nature craft. There will be a different theme each week.

Macy's Fishing Clinics - Prospect Park Wellhouse

Learn to fish safely and responsibly at these fishing clinics, which Macy's has sponsored for more than 50 years. Participants will learn best practices for fishing and realize how much fun fishing can be. This is a catch and release program.

CMA's Free Art Island Outpost - Governors Island

With a programming emphasis for children ages 1-12 years, participants can choose from a variety of hands on art projects and art-viewing experiences, including artist-led workshops, self-guided art stations, large collaborative projects, sound design, animation, podcasting, and more. Additionally, select artwork from CMA's permanent collection of over 2,000 pieces of children's artwork will be on display in building 14 and select children's made films from the unique Media Lab collection will be screened in building 11. Each day a guided workshop will accompany the collection exhibit and film screening to further enrich the art and film viewing.

The New Street Types of New York - Alice Austen House
Through September 29, 2013 - Staten Island

Alice Austen?s groundbreaking portfolio ?Street Types of New York? from 1894, marks her as one of the earliest female street photographers who captured the changing face of the city?s working class just before the turn of the century. Today a new generation of photographers continues her legacy of documenting the ever-changing city. This exhibition includes work by: Alice Austen, Chris Arnade, Alice Attie, Dmitry Gudkov, Peter Funch, Andy Jones, Wayne Lawrence, Erica McDonald, Greg Miller, Christina Paige, Susanna Ray, Richard Renaldi, Ruddy Roye, Geordie Wood, and AnRong Xu. The New Street Types draws connections from early street portraiture like that of Alice Austen (1866-1952) to contemporary image-makers. The artists selected for the exhibition work in a similar style to Austen, often employing large format photography to create portraits of New York City?s diverse communities and subcultures ? including the outer fringes of the expanding city like the Rockaways and Orchard Beach. In addition to the contemporary images, Alice Austen?s rare and fascinating ?Street Types? portfolio, produced c.1896 by the Albertype Company, will be on display. The Alice Austen House is open Tuesday-Sunday 11am-5pm and is handicap accessible.

Tree house architect Roderick Romero has created a whimsical, inhabitable sculpture using wood from trees felled by Hurricane Sandy.
