Pay What You Wish Week - CUMBE Center for African and Diaspora Dance
September 09, 2013 - Fort Greene

Cumbe offers a Pay-As-You-Wish week from Sept. 9th-15th in which prospective students, ages 1-12, can try out some of the Center's classes. Among them are introductions to creative movement with a multicultural flair and classes that combine dance, drumming, and song. There are also classes in hip hop and street jazz, dance theater, acrobatics, and more.

Brooklyn Open - Brooklyn Public Library, central branch

Teens enjoy an open mic event where poets, spoken work artists, emcees, scholars and activists to share their powerful and important voices. Run by youth for youth, with youth DJs, youth hosts and a monthly featured poet.

Lego Time - Brooklyn Public Library, Leonard branch

Kids set their imaginations free using Lego building blocks.

CMA's Free Art Island Outpost - Governors Island
Through September 29, 2013 - Governors Island

With a programming emphasis for children ages 1-12 years, participants can choose from a variety of hands on art projects and art-viewing experiences, including artist-led workshops, self-guided art stations, large collaborative projects, sound design, animation, podcasting, and more. Additionally, select artwork from CMA's permanent collection of over 2,000 pieces of children's artwork will be on display in building 14 and select children's made films from the unique Media Lab collection will be screened in building 11. Each day a guided workshop will accompany the collection exhibit and film screening to further enrich the art and film viewing.

The New Street Types of New York - Alice Austen House
Through September 29, 2013 - Staten Island

Alice Austen?s groundbreaking portfolio ?Street Types of New York? from 1894, marks her as one of the earliest female street photographers who captured the changing face of the city?s working class just before the turn of the century. Today a new generation of photographers continues her legacy of documenting the ever-changing city. This exhibition includes work by: Alice Austen, Chris Arnade, Alice Attie, Dmitry Gudkov, Peter Funch, Andy Jones, Wayne Lawrence, Erica McDonald, Greg Miller, Christina Paige, Susanna Ray, Richard Renaldi, Ruddy Roye, Geordie Wood, and AnRong Xu. The New Street Types draws connections from early street portraiture like that of Alice Austen (1866-1952) to contemporary image-makers. The artists selected for the exhibition work in a similar style to Austen, often employing large format photography to create portraits of New York City?s diverse communities and subcultures ? including the outer fringes of the expanding city like the Rockaways and Orchard Beach. In addition to the contemporary images, Alice Austen?s rare and fascinating ?Street Types? portfolio, produced c.1896 by the Albertype Company, will be on display. The Alice Austen House is open Tuesday-Sunday 11am-5pm and is handicap accessible.

Join CMA's Teaching Artists for free hands on art-making each weekend. Collaborate with other visitors on a variety of themed art workshops including painting, sound design, sculpture, animation, podcasting, and more.

Shipwrecked! A History of Maritime Disasters in NY Harbor - Governors Island

Learn about the maritime mayhem that once occured in NY Harbor. Genuine artifacts will be displayed.

Fete Paradiso - Governors Island

Revel in the nostalgia of vintage French carousels and carnival rides. As the event's promoter's describe, "F?te Paradiso will transport adults and children to a charming Parisian street fair of a bygone era." Fantasies aside, you and the kidlets will enjoy carousels, flying swings, a pipe organ, and an original "bicycle carousel" which, back in its time, was created to encourage Parisiens to use a then-new mode of transport: the bicycle!

Pet-A-Pet - Brooklyn Children's Museum

Meet and greet one of the Museum's animal friends. Investigate their habitat, diet, and create a unique animal artwork.

Free Open Hours - Waterfront Museum

Visit the Waterfront Museum during free open hours and learn about this historic Hudson River barge and the maritime history of New York harbor.

Tree House Installation - Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Tree house architect Roderick Romero has created a whimsical, inhabitable sculpture using wood from trees felled by Hurricane Sandy. This "tree house" will be part open-air classroom, part viewing point, and part artwork. Created specifically for BBG, it will invite visitors of all ages to experience the Garden in a new way.
