Sea Turtle Cold Stun Lectures - Wertheim National Wildlife refuge
November 01, 2012 - Shirley

"Cold-stunning” is a process that causes sea turtles to become immobile due to the dramatic decrease in water temperature (usually below 50°F) making it impossible for them to escape the cold water and migrate to warmer water. Once these turtles wash up on our beaches, it is a race for time. A cold-stunned sea turtle may appear to be dead, but may actually be alive! Without proper intervention a cold stunned sea turtle will inevitably die. Please join the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation for a Cold Stunned Sea Turtle Lecture and learn how you can help rescue sea turtles. Last season the Riverhead Foundation recovered 11 cold stunned sea turtles thanks to the public and our volunteer beach patrollers. If you would like to attend a training lecture and learn how to help rescue sea turtles by patrolling your local beach, please register for one of our free lectures. You can register by calling our office at 631.369.9840 or email ksotolotto@riverheadfoundation.org.

Exhibition: Marc Chagall - Nassau County Museum of Art
Through November 04, 2012 - Roslyn Harbor

Marc Chagall is a major exhibition that includes a significant selection of about half of Chagall’s 1957 series of hand-colored etchings of Bible stories, a series never before seen on Long Island. The exhibition portrays this important and loved artist as a storyteller, demonstrating how Chagall, throughout a long and distinguished career, incorporated facets of his early Russian-Jewish heritage into multilayered works. Chagall’s storytelling paintings portray a fantastic pictorial world where heaven and earth seem to meet. It’s a world where people and animals—cows, goats, donkeys, horses and birds—float upside down or sideways, irrespective of the laws of gravity, and couples are always in love. Chagall’s hypersensitive imagination is palpable as he shares with the viewer his memories of family in brilliantly colored works set amidst the houses and streets of his native Vitebsk. The exhibition runs through November 4, 2012.
