The Calhoun School Adds New Discovery Lab Class

The Calhoun School, on the Upper West Side, has a new discovery lab class for children in kindergarten through second grade.

With this new course, children will have the opportunity to design, build and create new things such as models of neighborhoods and small machine units.

“This course promotes our philosophy of hands on learning,” Director of Enrollment and External Affairs Andrew Hume said. “Children can apply information to their work instead of passively absorbing it.”

The new science lab at Calhoun features such things like work shop tools, 3-D printers and science microscopes. Even though the lab is a work in progress, children will still get the benefit of working in small groups and taking field trips out to study venues like community parks.

Opportunities like the science lab encourage students to experiment, take risks, discover new interests and pursue their passions more deeply.

Calhoun aims to inspire children to learn through a progressive approach to education that values intellectual pursuit, creativity, diversity, and community involvement.

With Calhoun’s teachings and practices, students will understand the impact of their actions on the multiple communities in which they live.
