Cunningham Tennis Summer Camp Adds STEAM Program

Cunningham Tennis, a year-round tennis program that offers lessons, classes, and summer camps in Kew Gardens, is adding a STEAM program to its Discovery Camp this summer. The camp is for kids ages 4-10 and offers professional tennis instruction as well as educational enrichment, arts and crafts, swimming, additional sports, and day trips.

A certified New York City teacher will lead the STEAM program, says Bill Racho, owner and director of tennis. “Art will be included with the science, technology, and engineering components, and the teacher has some activities that will help campers to explore and to practice critical thinking. We will be doing coding as well,” Racho adds.

Children in Discovery Camp will get 2-3 hours of tennis daily in addition to the STEAM classes and other enrichment. Four day trips are scheduled each summer and past trips have included Adventureland in Farmingdale, New York Hall of Science in Corona, Q-ZAR laser tag in Carle Place, mini golf, and the US Open.

“We are a big proponent of teaching kids to work together,” says Racho. “We want kids to have a better relationship with technology. We actually ask kids at our camp not to use technology at all except when we designate it to them. Doing these kinds of programs get kids to work better together and use technology in a better way.”

Camp runs for nine weeks from July 2-Aug. 31, and campers may register for any number of weeks. Early drop off, late pick up, full- or half-day options, and transportation are available. Lunch will be served daily.
