Heels and Wheels: The Big Noise Around Little Toys Exhibit - Coe Hall-Planting Fields

This summer, fashion-conscious Barbie dolls and sleek Matchbox cars will be strutting and cruising at Planting Fields. The exhibition, "Heels and Wheels: The Big Noise Around Little Toys" chronicles the history of these toys. The show is revealing about the broad culture of American life, particularly in the 1950s, 60s and 70s during the initial heyday of Barbie's and Matchbox toys. This period of huge, post-World War II suburban expansion with massive new interstate road projects, car manufacturing, and an explosion of the fashion industry, is directly reflected in the toys exhibited. The show will be held in the 1957 Manor House with its stylish rooms, which make a perfect backdrop for the glamorous Barbies. In the exhibition the dolls and cars are grouped chronologically, diorama-style, on individual stands. The dolls are accompanied by vintage print advertisements. An old issue of Life magazine features Hollywood star, Grace Kelly, whose dress on the cover inspired the inaugural run of Barbies in 1959.

American Museum of Natural History Presents: Spiders Alive! - American Museum of Natural History

Back by popular demand this exhibit is a comprehensive look at the fascinating and complex world of arachnids. Among the exhibition’s live animals are 16 species of spiders, two species of scorpion, a chemical-spewing vinegaroon, and several long-legged tailless whip spiders—which aren’t spiders at all. The Museum, which has the world’s largest research collection of spiders, has been at the forefront of studying spider diversity for over 75 years. In Spiders Alive!, visitors will explore spider anatomy, diversity, venom, silk, and encounter little known behaviors such as mimicry and noisemaking. In addition to live spiders, the exhibition features videos, fossils, and larger-than-life models, including a huge, climbable trapdoor spider. Museum staff will handle live arachnids for visitors to see up close, and the exhibition will focus on debunking spider myths like their needing gravity to build webs, that they all neglect their offspring, and that all spiders are dangerous to humans.

'Enduring Images' Exhibition - David Filderman Gallery

As active witnesses to or participants in an experience, or as passive observers, artists through the centuries have played a pivotal role in capturing and recording the events of our times. Drawn from the HUM’s permanent collections, this exhibition focuses on the lasting record created by an artist's visual responses to critical moments in time. The artist Yonia Fain, a Holocaust survivor considered a “witness to history,” will be represented, along with artists such as George Grosz, Käthe Kollwitz, and Jacob Lawrence.

On this day for children and adults with special needs, Sky Zone dials down the music, increases the staff ratio, and limits capacity. The Sky Zone team understands the need to provide families affected by autism with a recurring session time where individuals can learn the rules and practice them in a safe and comfortable environment so they can eventually generalize these skills and be fully integrated at any time. Takes place the first Monday of the month through June 2015.

The Cartoon: A Juried East End Arts Gallery Show - East End Arts Gallery

This show will feature artwork with elements of cartoon; East End Arts Gallery Director Jane Kirkwood explains: "The cartoon has more than one meaning in art. It can be a caricature where a subject's features are exaggerated in a humorous way. It's also what those strange, flat little creatures that pop out of our imagination onto our drawing pad are called. And what we call an animated film. Lastly, it's the full-size drawing made by an artist as a preliminary design for a painting or other work of art." This show will be juried by Matthew Langland, artist and key animator of the feature film 'Waking Life'.
