Through March 22, 2015 - Chelsea

If your kids love music or noise making you won't want to miss this. Award-winning musician and educator Hayes Greenfield presents a fun, creative, and highly interactive sound experience for families and kids of all ages. The audience plays the role of the orchestra and chorus, with Hayes Greenfield serving as maestro for a splendid sonic journey that harnesses kids' sheer love of making sound. No instruments are necessary because all sounds are made by participants' hands, arms, legs, feet, and voices, as they tap, clap, rub, stomp, and vocalize. If kids want to bring instruments, however, all are welcome, especially hand-held percussion instruments like pots and pans, shakers, sticks, tambourines, triangles, cymbals, and party noise makers. Working and playing with sound enhances children's abilities by developing focus, concentration, active memory, creative flexibility, self-regulation, socialization, and hand/eye coordination, while raising self-esteem. Beyond all that, it's just plain fun!

From Here to There- A New Exhibit at the Brooklyn Children's Museum - Brooklyn Children's Museum
Through May 10, 2015 - Crown Heights

Explore the science of how things move by land, sea and air at Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s new traveling exhibition, From Here to There. Visitors can turn up the heat to launch a colorful hot air balloon, operate an authentic canal lock system to move a boat from one water level to the next, and experiment with pneumatics, pulleys, hydraulics and levers to see what kind of mechanical advantage works best. From Here to There consists of twelve fun, interactive exhibits. “This exhibit takes complex concepts from physics and make them accessible to even the youngest learner”, said Marcos Stafne, Ph.D., Vice President of Programs & Visitor Experience. “By creating a hands-on learning experience, exhibits like From Here to There make abstract and advanced topics tangible to children, and spark conversation and interaction among families, which is our ultimate goal.” The 1,500 square foot exhibition is color-coded and divided into three main categories: transportation by land, sea and air. At the Earthmovers exhibit, visitors can discover how simple machines can help move things across land. This ball-pit is fun for all ages, but is designed with the museum’s youngest visitors in mind. Air Tubes allow visitors to send colored balls in a rushing channel of air from one station to another. Visitors can watch the balls as they dart across walls, over the exhibition entrance, and appear at the other station in record time. Visitors can test out rudder and sail positions in Set Sail to send boats across a windy lake. In the Waterways exhibit, kids can operate an authentic canal lock system by adjusting valves to raise and lower water levels. Visitors can Feel the Friction as they try to move different weights across dirt, tracks and through water. Start Your Engines! explores how internal combustion engines work to power anything from cars and airplanes to lawnmowers and snow blowers.
