Guggenheim’s ‘A Year with Children 2017’ Opens Soon

The Guggenheim Museum’s annual  ‘A Year with Children 2017’ exhibit is set to open in just a few weeks.

The presentation is organized by the Guggenheim’s Sackler Center for Arts Education. It features artworks from students in the second through sixth grades from more than 10 New York City public schools. The exhibit is presented by Learning Through Art, the Guggenheim’s arts education program, which worked with the students across NYC. As part of the LTA program, students created more than 100 original pieces of art that include collages, drawings, found objects, installations, paintings, poems, and prints. They will soon be on display in the Guggenheim’s Tower Level 4 gallery.

This year LTA, in its 46th year, worked with 12 teaching artists who oversaw 16 residencies in more than 10 public schools. The teaching artists worked with teachers to develop projects that “promote visual literacy while exploring and making connections with ideas and themes related to the school’s curriculum,” according to a press release. Students were asked open ended-questions such as, “Where do new ideas come from?” and “How do our small actions result in big changes?” to help guide and inspire their art.

Participating schools across NYC include PS 86 (Kingsbridge Heights), PS 8 (Brooklyn Heights), PS 9 (Prospect Heights), PS 28 (Washington Heights), PS 38 (East Harlem), PS 42 (Chinatown), PS 88 (Ridgewood), PS 130 (Bayside), PS 144, PS 175 (Rego Park), PS 317 (Rockaway Park), and PS 48 (Grasmere).

Visitors can look forward to exhibits like “Four-Sided Me,” from the students at PS 42 in Chinatown, who were asked the essential question: “How do we shape our world?” Student artists created four-sided wooden sculptures incorporating aspects of their personal identity: their present self, future self, animal spirit, and either an historical figure or present-day influencer. Visitors will also get to experience “Beyond the Cube” from the students at PS 86 in the Bronx. The students explored the concept of sameness and difference. Their final projects began as identical cubes but as the weeks progressed each student brought their own personal expression to their cube by adding paint and further construction to it.

The Guggenheim Museum’s annual ‘A Year with Children 2017’ exhibit runs April 28-June 4. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is located at 1071 5th Ave. on the Upper East Side.
