DAR Program: President-elect Lincoln's visit to Peekskill 1861 - John C. Hart Memorial Library

By Anthony J. Czarnecki, past President of the Lincoln Society of Peekskill. During Lincoln's historic 12-day train journey from his home in Springfield, IL to his Inauguration in Washington, DC in Feb. 1861, Lincoln participated in 100 speaking stops or public events along the way. His only speaking stop in Westchester County was at the Peekskill train depot, because he knew the local Congressman, William Nelson (they both served in the 30th Congress from 1847-1849). Program is appropriate for school-age children through adults. No registration necessary.

Heroes Storywalk: 'Giant Steps to Change the World' By Spike Lee - White Plains Public Library

Learn about heroes of our time - men and women who stood up for what they believed in. Guess who they are and what they did, and celebrate their achievements along this storywalk in the library. The Storywalk is based on the book entitled, "Giant Steps to Change the World," written by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, and illustrated by Sean Qualls. Open to families with children in grades 1-6 beginning Sunday, February 19 and continuing through Sunday, March 25, 2012. Storywalk instructions are available at the Children's Information Desk (The Compass) in The Trove. Participants must sign in there before proceeding on the walk. Children in grades 1-3 must be accompanied by an adult on the walk. Children in grades 4-6 may follow the walk without an adult.
