New Yorkers Can Rejoice: No More Late Fees at the NYC Libraries

In addition to ending late fees, the New York Public Library will hold “Welcome Week” events in Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island.

Details of the Fine Elimination at New York City's Libraries

While the details are slightly different for each system (and specifics can be found at bklynlibrary.org, nypl.org, and queenslibrary.org), generally, under the new fine-free policies:

• New Yorkers of all ages will no longer need to pay any late fines on overdue materials
• In the past, library cards were blocked if they accrued $15 or more in fines; that will no longer be the case
• New Yorkers will still need to pay replacement fees if they lose material. Materials are considered lost after being overdue for about 1 month. If materials are returned, however, no fees will apply.
• Cards will be blocked from borrowing additional physical materials if patrons accrue replacement fees (thresholds differ per system). However, even with a block on their cards, patrons can still access computers, e-books, and other digital services.

Fine-Free Fun at NYPL’s Welcome Week: Oct. 18-23

In an effort to welcome patrons back to libraries, the New York Public Library will hold a week of giveaways and special programs at all branch locations beginning Monday, Oct. 18. 

Here are some of our top picks for kids and families during Welcome Week at the libraries:

Toddler Storytime

Muhlenberg Library, 209 W. 23 St., Chelsea, Manhattan
Monday, Oct. 18, 11-11:30am
Ages: walking children ages 3 and younger, adult

Toddlers and their caregivers can enjoy interactive stories, action songs, and fingerplays.

Welcome Wall

South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Lane, Staten Island
Monday. Oct. 18, 11am-5pm
Ages: all

Stop by the library to see and contribute to the new 'Welcome Wall,' a space where the community can come together to write down and share what they have missed about the library and their hopes for the future.

Babies and Toddlers Storytime

Clason's Point Library, 1215 Morrison Ave., Soundview, Bronx
Monday, Oct. 18, 11-11:30am
Ages: children ages 3 and younger, adult

Babies and toddlers will discover the joys of movement, books, and song as they begin to build their early learning skills. Get to know other parents in the neighborhood. Limit of 10 families. 

Free Book Day!

Van Nest Library, 2147 Barnes Ave., Pelham Parkway, Bronx
Tuesday, Oct. 19 and Friday, Oct. 22, 3:30-4:30pm
Ages: all

Visit the Van Nest Library and receive a free book...to keep! Kids and teens will have a chance to browse from an assortment of special books and give them a new home. Take some time to sit and talk with friends or read a book of your choice. 

Open House

Bloomingdale Library, 150 W. 100th St., Manhattan Valley, Manhattan

Celebrate NYPL's Welcome Week with a visit to the recently renovated Bloomingdale Library. Register for a library card and find some books you've been wanting to read.

Show & Tell Storytime

Teen Center Open House

During this open house, teens will have the opportunity to explore books, engage with their peers, and learn about the different programs and resources available for them at the Bronx Library Center, including college and careers pathways programs and some other fun surprises.

Teen Makecode Arcade

West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave., Staten Island

Ages: 13-18

Get an introduction to Microsoft Makecode Arcade, a web-based beginner-friendly code editor to create retro arcade games for the web and for dedicated hardware. Learn the basics on how to create a video game in Makecode Arcade.
