Rudolf Steiner School Hosts Music and Sustainability Camps

Rudolf Steiner School, a K-12 Waldorf school in Manhattan, is hosting two new summer camps this year. The school has added a sustainability and environmental camp and a jazz and theater camp.

Rudolf Steiner School is hosting two summer camps: the Steiner Sustainability Camp and a Jazz and Musical Theater Camp, brought over from The Brearley School.

Two high school teachers at Rudolf Steiner created the Steiner Sustainability Camp because they were trying to come up with camp ideas for older kids. The teachers wanted to combine fun in the outdoors with sustainability concepts for kids in fourth through 12th grades. This three-week camp will have arts and crafts, outdoor sports, and environmental projects from Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3pm.

Jeff Venho, band director at Rudolf Steiner School, brought the Jazz and Musical Theater Camp from The Brearley School, where he also teaches, to Rudolf Steiner. Venho will lead the instrumental instruction in the morning and his wife Clio will lead the musical theater half in the afternoon. On the last day of the camp, there will be a performance to showcase what the kids learned.

Brian Kaplan, director of marketing and communications at the Rudolf Steiner School, says he is thrilled that these camps will be offered because it is an edifying experience for the kids. “Camp should definitely be about fun, that’s first and foremost,” Kaplan says. “If they learn something, not only about the arts, but also about the world around them, that’s sort of twice the benefit of the camp.”

The Steiner Sustainabilty Camp will run from June 15-July 3 and the Jazz and Musical Theater Camp will run from June 15-26. Registration is now open for both camps.
