Rye Playland to Get $60 Million Upgrade

Officials announced that family amusement park Rye Playland will receive $60 million worth of improvements, reported Yonkers Daily Voice.

The planned improvements are a result of a partnership between Westchester County and private company, Standard Amusements. The contributions will be split between the public-private partnership. Thirty million dollars will be coming from Standard Amusements, which will have the right to operate the park for 30 years. And another $30 million will be coming from the county, which will pay for projects including refurbishing historic rides, improving structures for games and concessions, and shoreline rehabilitation, reported Yonkers Daily Voice.

Rye Playland will remain fully operational while the improvements take place and will open for its 89th season on May 13.

County Executive Rob Astorino told reporters, “Construction is now set to get underway, and once completed, Playland will be infused with new excitement and experiences to be enjoyed alongside all the traditions, like the Dragon Coaster, that are part of growing up in Westchester.”

New rides that were announced include Windstarz, Revolution 32, and Unicoaster. They are scheduled to open in 2019.

Nicholas Singer of Standard Amusements told reporters, “We are excited to be part of Playland’s future. Our goal is to focus on family fun that will create lasting memories while bringing new vitality into the park.”

Fifty percent of the infrastructure work is expected to be complete by Nov. 2018, at which time Standard Amusements will take over Rye Playland operations. The agreement also states that once Standard Amusements has regained its initial investments, a portion of the profits will be shared with Westchester County.
