On May 18, fashion photographer Nigel Barker, Top Chef’s Josie Smith-Malave, and U.S. Olympian Kristy Kowal, helped celebrate the first-ever “Safe Kids Day” by Safe Kids Worldwide at Highline Stages in Manhattan to raise awareness about keeping children and teens safe and to educate families about preventable injuries, whether playing sports, biking outdoors, or even driving.

Barker and wife Cristin brought their children Jack and Jasmine. “Making people aware through education like this is vital because accidents in the home and with kids, it’s the number one killer of children in the U.S.,” Barker says.

Lines of eager children swarmed up to chef Josie Smith-Malave’s guacamole stand for a first-hand cooking demonstration of her signature recipe. The kids were encouraged to mash the avocados and press in the fresh garlic and herbs.

Olympic swimmer and medalist Kristy Kowal encouraged kids to have fun in the ball pit, which represented a pool, and reminded them to stay safe in the water this summer.

The event featured a sprots field where guests learned about playing sports safely, a wheels shop where kids were fitted fora a free bike helmet, and an interactive driving game that challenged parents and teens to begin the conversation on teen driving.
