Stuff We Like: Gifts for Dad

“It’s just another day.” That’s what my dad always said about Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and birthdays when I was growing up. What he meant is that he treated us—my mother, my siblings, and me—like royalty every day: He always made the coffee, took care of the dog, and made us breakfast in the mornings, so why should he act any different one day a year?

Every year, when I asked him if there was anything in particular that he wanted for Father’s Day, he would say he didn’t want anything. I got really good at figuring out what to get him: a new grill, a gift card to Home Depot so he could pick out a new toy, a book that I thought he would enjoy. My favorite thing to get him? My fishing license so we could spend quality time together out on the lake.

If the dad in your life is anything like my dad, you may need some help figuring out what to get him this Father’s Day to show him how much you love him and appreciate all the things that make him Dad. We’ve compiled a list of a few things we think he’ll love:

birthstone pendent For the New Dad Priceless Prints from Prairie Creations is the perfect gift for a new father. Order a kit and follow the detailed instructions to create a pendant with your newborn’s fingerprint impressed on it. You can personalize it further by having your child’s initials hand-stamped on the back and adding a Swarovski Crystal in the color of his/her birthstone on the front. If your dad isn’t a fan of wearing jewelry, add this unique charm to his key ring!

An Embellished Golf Game The perfect gift “fore” the golf-loving dad is this set of two golf markers made of pewter. Customize them with a special word or short phrase to remind Dad how much he’s loved while he’s playing the 18 holes. Each marker can say something different—but choose your message wisely, you only have 13 characters to work with!  Pewter Golf Markers

Like Father, Like Son Does the father-son duo in your house spend countless hours playing catch in the yard, talk non-stop about sports, or attend every baseball game they can in the summer? If they do, you’re sure to hit a home run when you give them these Father and Son personalized (on the front and back) baseball jerseys! For a grand slam, check out our list of minor league baseball teams in the area and get the father-son duo tickets to a game, too!

Dear Photograph Taylor Jones, 22, was inspired to begin what is now a hugely popular website, DearPhotograph.com, after sifting through old family photos while sitting at his parents’ kitchen table. He came across an image of his brother sitting at that very table, lifted up the photo, and snapped a picture of the picture. He’d stumbled upon a unique way to link past and present—one that thousands of individuals have recreated, taking pictures of pictures in the places where they were originally shot, reliving special moments. The book, a compilation of more than 140 never-before-seen “Dear Photograph” submissions with dedications that span the emotional spectrum from silly to profound, is a wonderful gift, as well as a prompt for creating your own photographic time-transporting treasures (William Morrow, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers; $25.99).
