3 Fun Programs at NY-Area YMCAs for Kids

In a perfect world, the whole family maintains a nice schedule all summer long. The kids wake up, have breakfast, brush up on their reading skills, do a few chores, and then play peacefully for the rest of the afternoon. Sound like your house this summer? Of course it doesn’t! Those dog days of summer are long and hot, and finding something to occupy all those leisurely hours is a full time job in and of itself.

So if your family is looking for something to occupy a few afternoons, YMCAs in the New York area may have just the answer. The organization has four fun and educational programs that kids can still sign up for:

Safety Around Water

Certified instructors teach kids of all ages how to swim. In these lessons, children learn swimming skills including floating, ability to swim to safety and how to exit the water in a safe and cautious way. Children also learn valuable water safety skills, including life-saving tactics, drowning precautions, and how to respond appropriately during a dangerous situation.

Summer Learning Loss Programs

According to the Y, many children lose up to two months of math and reading skills over the summer months. Help combat that brain dump by signing you child up for The Y’s Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program, a course that helps elementary school students reading below grade level. Students focus on phonics, writing, and reading to boost literacy skills, as well as physical and social emotional growth.

Summer Camps

Nationwide, 1.4 million youth and adults attend Y camps, including 970,000 kids and adults through summer day and overnight camp programs. At these camps, kids and teenagers enjoy new and fun activities that boost character development and build new and lasting friendships.
