VEG Offers STEM and Art Programs in Roslyn and Huntington

Village East Gifted, an enrichment center that offers programs for gifted and talented students ages 4-18, is offering two new programs this year: STEM programs in Roslyn Heights and Huntington Station and an Art Program in Huntington Station.

Village East Gifted, an enrichment center for gifted and talented students ages 4-18, will offer new STEM programs in Roslyn Heights and Huntington Station. The center will also offer a new Art Program in Huntington Station and an additional Gifted Kindergarten in Roslyn Heights. The STEM and art programs are open to kindergarten through fifth grades beginning in September, and will be available for sixth through 10th grades in the future.

The STEM program in Roslyn, held on Saturdays, focuses on mechatronics (mechanics, electronics, informatics, automation, and robotics). “Students study advanced robotics and create innovative solutions in the fields of energy statistics, genetics, bio plastics, health technology, environmental pollution, and more, presenting their solutions using telecasts, podcasts, and film documentaries,” says Tobi J. Phillips, Ed. D. (cert.), founder and headmaster.

The STEM program in Huntington Station, held Thursdays after school, focuses on research and hands-on workshops in the fields of spaceflight (designing, building, and testing student-created rockets and parachutes), engineering (building moon landers, hover crafts, and catapults), and microscopic studies (micrometeorites and microbiology in the solar system).

In the Art Program, students will “analyze the symbolism and techniques of famous artists, and the cultural and personal connections reflected in their works,” Phillips says. Students will also engage in ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, and batik techniques to communicate their own thoughts about societal issues.

The Gifted Kindergarten in Roslyn, which is currently offered in Huntington Station five half-days a week, is open to children ages 4-5 two afternoons per week. Students will study SAT words, Latin, grammar, writing, world history, mathematics, geography, creative problem solving, computer research, and more.
