Weekly Web Round-Up: Week of April 20, 2012

Tired of same old, same old family photos? Over at Bored Panda, we learned about Jason Lee, a wedding photographer who started taking fun pictures of his daughters to send to their grandmother. Jim’s photos aren’t your typical family album fare; he has manipulated photos so that his daughters look like they’re sprouting out of the earth, blasting into space, turning the tables on the big bad wolf, and more. “Most of the ideas come from his daughters – eight-year-old Kristin and five-year-old Kayla. Jason says that they are never-ending source of ideas.” Be sure to check out the whole set at Bored Panda.   Does your kid have a bad case of “potty mouth”? Babble offers some solutions with “S***, My Kid Is Cursing!

“Rather than simply forbidding or ignoring them, try using potty words and F-bombs as teachable moments — times that actually help kids get a grasp on social rules and emotional dynamics. If that seems like a tall order, it doesn’t have to be.”

Parents with older children heading to college next fall might be worried about drugs, partying, and alcohol. But Motherlode brought some interesting research to our attention: College students whose parents pay less, party less. It makes sense to us:

“The researchers found a striking correlation: the group of college students least likely to report engaging in risky behavior (drinking, binge drinking, marijuana use and smoking) were those who contributed the most, financially, to their own education.”

Not to mention the inherent value and important lessons that come from giving some of the financial responsibility of education to your child!   Finally, we couldn’t get enough of these youngsters reading the voiceovers for Planet Earth. Sure, it’s an advertisement for BBC America, but we couldn’t help smiling at these adorable kids.
