Weekly Web Round-Up: Week of May 25, 2012

Last week we told you about 13-year-old Mallory Kievman who invented the Hiccupop. This week we have another genius teen. Fifteen-year-old Jack Andraka won first place at Intel’s Science Talent Search for inventing “a simple dipstick test that can detect pancreatic cancer cheaper and better than any other currently in use.”   “Don’t play with your food.” Whoever made this rule didn’t have one of these guys for a dad. Nathan  and Jim cook up creative pancakes for their little ones to enjoy for breakfast. Nathan uses a turkey baster to control the flow of the pancake batter, while Jim uses a plastic restaurant-style ketchup bottle

Jim’s pancake version of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.

The folks over at Marvel Comics have created a comic book for 4-year-old Anthony Smith. Smith’s grandmother, Lou D’Allesandro, emailed Marvel Comics asking for help after “he stubbornly refused to [wear his hearing aid] because superheroes don’t have hearing aids.”   Have you heard the alarming story about the video of the toddler that was trapped in a washing machine at the laundromat? Well, it turns out that the child wasn’t with his parents like news sources originally thought: he was with his babysitter and her male friend. The boy’s mother Saskia David told the Today Show, “This is not over—because everybody said on the news that I wasn’t pressing charges, and I am.”   Hopefully that video doesn’t scare you from ever leaving your children with a babysitter, because Ilana over at Mommy Shorts is giving away gift cards to UrbanSitter, a website that just launched in New York where parents can find babysitters at a moment’s notice.

“But who are these sitters and why should I trust total strangers to watch my child?

UrbanSitter runs through Facebook Connect so you can see who all your friends have used and recommended. You can also see sitters who have been recommended by affiliation— like parents who go to your preschool or belong to the same little league team. Or check out your sitter’s friends— because most people I know (including myself) find sitters through previous sitters.

And if you need a level of trust higher than a friend’s word, UrbanSitter has made sure a number of sitters are background checked in each location.”

On last night’s premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Season 9, auditions took place in New York City and Dallas. Bree Hafen, 29-year-old mom of two auditioned in Dallas. Watch the video to hear her talk about motherhood and see her dance. The best parts? When her son gives her a ticket to Vegas (around the 2:30 mark), and when her daughter dances.

Finally, we need your support. NYMetroParents has partnered with indiegogo.com and the documentary Autistic Like Me: A Father’s Perspective to raise money for the ALM Outreach Campaign, “an initiative to raise awareness about autism and the special role of fathers of children with autism.” We only have until June 1 to raise money.  So please, donate.
