Our list of 14 things to do for Earth Day in Rockland County, NY, this year includes festivals at two nearby zoos and opportunities to volunteer at community cleanups in Blauvelt, Congers, Haverstraw, Montebello, Nanuet, New City, Nyack, Pearl River, Pomona, Spring Valley, and Stony Point.
Earth Day (April 22) has evolved into a wide-reaching excuse to get some fresh air, do some good for the planet, and maybe learn a little something about the environment. This month, Rockland and Bergen residents can find a variety of ways to celebrate this international event.
2013 Community Cleanups in Rockland
Keep Rockland Beautiful, a nonprofit that motivates thousands of volunteers each year to clean up, beautify, and improve their neighborhoods, hosts its signature Great American Cleanup events throughout the county this spring. Here's what's on the schedule for April (register at keeprocklandbeautiful.org; call 845-708-9164 for more info):
Blauvelt: April 27; call for meeting location and time.
Congers: Meet in Congers Train Station Park at Lake Road and Burnside Avenue. April 20 at 9am.
Haverstraw: April 14; call for meeting location and time.
Montebello: Meet at Montebello Village Hall, 1 Montebello Road. April 13 at 9am.
Nanuet: Meet at the Stop and Shop Parking Lot at 32 S. Middletown Road. April 13 at 10am.
New City: Meet at the Stop and Shop Parking Lot at 180 N. Main St. April 21 at 10am.
Nyack: Meet at the Nyack Center at 58 Depew Avenue. April 21 at 9:30am.
Pearl River: Meet at the Pearl River Gazebo on Central Avenue. April 20 at 10am.
Pomona: Meet at the Village Hall, 100 Ladentown Road. April 28 at 10am.
Spring Valley: April 20; call for meeting location and time.
Stony Point: Meet at the James A. Farley Middle School, 140 Route 210. April 6 at 9am.
Earth Day at the Zoo
April 20: Join the animals for an Earth Day Celebration full of educational programs and activities at the Bear Mountain Zoo.
April 21: That same weekend, the Bergen County Zoo in Paramus, NJ, hosts its annual Party for the Planet where you can say hello to the zoo’s international animal ambassadors and learn about eco-friendly products, programs, and services in our area. All young visitors will receive a special “passport,” which they can get stamped by exhibitors and turn in for a small prize.
Celebrations at the Nature Museum
April 27: Finally, the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum in Cornwall invites families to enjoy a day of special events in honor of the green holiday. Activities include a Hike-a-Thon at 9:30am, an Earth Day Celebration from 10am-3pm, and the opening of Grasshopper Grove: Gateway to Nature Play at 12pm.
