Keeping Baby Safe
An infant car seat is an essential item for keeping your newborn safe in the car, and without one, you may even find that your new life as a family will be delayed -- many hospitals have a policy of not allowing you to take your baby home without such a seat, so make sure you buy one with plenty of time to spare.
There are different types of car seats depending on your child's age, weight, and height. Babies up to 2 years old should travel in a rear-facing seat, as this is the safest way to transport an infant. Once your child has outgrown a rear-facing seat, the next stage is an upright, forward-facing seat with a five-point baby harness to hold your child in place. Both rear- and forward-facing seats are either securely fixed to the seat using a three-point rear seat belt or, if you have a new car, the ISOFIX points (fittings at the rear of the back seat that allow a seat to be attached to the chassis of the car).
To ensure that you buy the right seat for your car, it's best to have a retailer fit it. Never buy a secondhand seat. Even if it looks fine, it may have been damaged and have hidden weaknesses.
