Families can enjoy a day dedicated to their pet. A canine costume contest with prizes, games, and pet adoption. The contest will begin at noon. Treat bags for the 1st 25 people. Free or low-cost spray and neutering will also be available.

Ridgewood Youthmarket - GrowNYC: Ridgewood Farmers Market
Through October 27, 2012 - Ridgewood

Families can support this special market,now in its fourth season. Youth from the Bushwick and Ridgewood community come out to this lively market each Saturday to sell fresh fruits and vegetables. Modeled after Greenmarket, Youthmarket is a unique solution to food access in NYC. GrowNYC purchases produce from Greenmarket farmers and trains young people from underserved areas of the city to operate a farm stand in their neighborhood as their own small business.

Family Art Project - The Masked Parade of the Hairy Insects - Wave Hill

Use materials of all shapes and sizes to create funny, fuzzy insect masks. Then take your ladybug, worker ant, or daddy long-legs for a stroll. Admission to the grounds is free until noon. Ecology Building.

Halloween Craft Workshop & Historic House Tour - Louis Armstrong House Museum
October 27, 2012 - Corona

Kids and their families can enjoy this spooktacular event outside in Louis's Garden. Kids in costume will get a jump-start on collecting their candy! At 3pm, prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Live Jazz from the Louis Armstrong House Stompers will swing in the Garden, too. The museum will be open for historic house tours from 12-5pm. Tour price: $10; $7 for children, students, and seniors; free for children younger than 4. The rain date for this event is Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1-4pm.

Happy Owl-o-ween! - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Owls have long been a symbol of Halloween. Discover what makes these nighttime predators so successful while hearing about of the folklore of owls. Compost your Food Scraps! - Queens Public Library at Steinway

Parents can teach their children about sustainability by modeling green behaviors like composting. Simply bring your food scraps including fruit and vegetable scraps like peels, skins, or seeds), coffee grounds (including the paper filter), tea bags, eggshells, nutshells, plain bread, and pasta (no toppings) to the weekly food waste drop off location. The Western Queens Compost Initiative will turn the rest of your food waste into a nutrient-rich compost.
