'Mu-Math' Interactive Installation - Bldg. 315
Through September 30, 2012 - Governors Island

Opening Memorial Day weekend, Street Math Investigations (SMI-NY) will mount "Mu-Math," an installation of brain-twisting, hands-on math activities on Governors Island for its summer 2012 season. Mu-Math stands for Mobile Unit to Promote Mathematical Thinking, and the Greek letter "mu" (pronounced "mew") is commonly used in mathematics to identify specific constants and variables; it is also reminiscent of the term "New Math" which ushered in a new era of mathematics education during the 1960s. The exhibit is appropriate for families with children ages 6 and older. Created by mathematics educator Robert Berkman of Brooklyn, the Mu-Math exhibits use interactive hands-on materials to engage children and adults with various kinds of mathematical challenges using the life of New York City as a backdrop. For example: What's Your Subway’s Number? Arrange the iridescent subway cars in a tunnel to figure out the identity of the mystery car. On the Street: How should that street furniture be arranged? Use the clues to figure out the correct order. A Walk Around the Block: Participants navigate through a 100-square-foot floor maze using only right turns to find their way out. Find Your Fare: Using the clues provided, move your magnetic pedestrians around the streets and avenues to reach the ultimate goal: hailing a cab! While the Mu-Math exhibits are self-guided, there will always be a docent on hand to answer questions, explain how to use the materials, and even give hints. A "Mathematical Tour" of Governors Island will also be available as a downloadable podcast that will guide visitors around the island with a special mathematical perspective on its history, geography and art. Visitors will be able to download the podcast after June 15 at smi-ny.com.
