Commitment to education is among the core values of Jewish culture. From generation to generation we pass down the wisdom and teachings of one generation to the next. We are proud to be part of this chain of tradition ourselves.
As Humanistic Jews, we use critical thinking and scientific reasoning to assess inherited truths. We do not automatically accept as authoritative the teachings of the past. While we believe that it is important for our children to become familiar with stories from the Hebrew bible and other ancient texts, we also subject those stories to the same scrutiny that we would apply to any body of knowledge. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
Commitment to education is a core value of Jewish culture, and has been for thousands of years. We are proud to be part of this chain of tradition.
BACK TO SCHOOL
Our KidSchool is a vibrant learning community, directed by Peter Schweitzer our secular Rabbi. Rather than focusing on religion, we focus on cultural, historical and humanistic aspects of Judaism. Humanistic Jews believe that Judaism is the cumulative cultural and historical experience of the Jewish people; much more than a set of religious beliefs and practices. We offer KidSchool and adult programs twice-monthly on Sunday afternoons, nationally renowned Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, Friday night Shabbats in Midtown East (with special kids’ activities) and Secular High Holiday services.
EDUCATION
The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is a community of secular Jews who believe that reason and science, not tradition, is the basis of truth. We celebrate Jewish culture and identity by holding twice-monthly cultural Shabbat programs, humanistic High Holiday services, secular Passover Seders, twice-monthly Sunday KidSchool sessions, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, adult programs, and discussions. The Sunday school children’s and adult education programs are held at our Upper West Side location; Shabbat programs are held on the East Side, mid thirties.
