Brooklyn Free School|
372 Clinton Ave.,
Brooklyn Free School is celebrating it's tenth year as the only school in Brooklyn where every student from 4 to 18 years old, and staff member, has an equal vote in making important decisions to help the school community run better each week. It is a place where student voice and choice is truly honored. It is democracy and community building in action!
At BFS, student centered learning is facilitated through play and exploration, constructivist teaching, collaborative course work and self-directed student initiatives. Social and emotional learning is supported through conflict mediation with active student participation, personal reflection, diversity awareness and community responsibility. There are no mandatory tests or homework at BFS and the community is racially and socio-economically diverse.
Children who grow up in this kind of active, flexible and individually structured environment with real community responsibilities, become confident, self-motivated, independent, creative, learners and thinkers who are also skilled at working with others and solving problems.
