Riegleman Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue
Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY
Description: The historic Coney Island Polar Bear Club (CIPBC), the nation's original winter bathing club, will embrace 2013 with its 110th annual New Year's Day Plunge in the Atlantic Ocean in Coney Island. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, is expected to attract more than 2,000 winter bathers.
The Polar Bears will gather at the Riegleman Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue before charging into the ocean. Pre- and post-swim parties will be held at Coney Island establishments including Peggy O'Neills, Tom's Coney Island, Ruby's, the Beach Shop, Lola Starr and Popeye's.
The annual New Year's Day CIPBC swim raises money for Camp Sunshine, an organization that supports children facing life-threatening illness and their immediate families. (More info at http://www.crowdrise.com/ConeyIslandPolarDip.) The CIPBC will also partner with Coney Recovers, an initiative of Alliance for Coney Island, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting "the People's Playground" and improving quality of life for the entire Coney Island community, including storm relief. Attendees are encouraged to make donations at http://coneyrecovers.org/polarplunge.
Founded in 1903, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the nation's original polar bear/cold water swimming club and swims every Sunday during winter months.
