There are some things you can only do during the warm months of summer, such as catching fireflies, listening to crickets, and enjoying a theater performance with the wind at your back. Popular performances move out of the theaters and into the fresh air, either under a tent or completely open to the outdoors, fireflies and all. This month, catch highbrow yet accessible shows penned by The Bard or toe-tapping musicals starring Ariel, Danny and Sandy, The Cat in the Hat, and Pinkalicious.

Young readers will be thrilled to meet their favorite book characters at Quassy Amusement park’s Meet and Greet. Olivia (pictured), the pig straight from author Ian Falconer’s imagination, and Holly Hobbie’s Toot and Puddle will thrill children and no doubt encourage more reading. Olivia will be at the park Aug. 17-18. Toot and Puddle will be at the park Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Connecticut residents will feel a sense of pride when they visit the Discovery Museum for Gustave Whitehead: First in Flight Celebration. Whitehead’s first airplane flight has now been acknowledged by Governor Malloy as having taken place two years before the Wright Brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk. Visitors to the event will enjoy local model airplane clubs, public presentations with guest speakers and celebrities, planetarium shows, pop-up vendors, and educational demonstrations. FREE!

Children and adults may be familiar with the Bari Koral Family Rock Band. Koral has performed her top 10 songs on XM Kids Place Live and the band’s latest album, Rock and Roll Garden, has won the Parents' Choice Award and was picked as the top 10 kids' album of the year by Time Out Kids. Backed up by her band, she’ll perform her brand of catchy pop tunes in Westport this month. FREE!

Visit the Connecticut Science Center during its Back 2 School Bash and enjoy arts and crafts, face painting, family friendly-entertainment, and the opportunity to visit the MathAlive! exhibit before it closes. Buddy the T-Rex from the PBS show Dinosaur Train will be at the museum for a meet and greet.
