Gwynne and Douglas Campbell  “found” Sylvan in 1984, during a time when Doug was a corporate marketing director in Stamford and teaching part-time at a local university, and Gwynne was at Greenwich Academy. Gwynne grew up in Portland, the daughter of two educators, one of whom was a school headmaster, She knew many of the people who had been involved with Sylvan’s founding in Portland OR (see History below). In her educational work, she too had seen the growing need for supplemental educational services. It was a perfect fit , so Doug and Gwynne opened the first center on the east coast in February 1985 after 6 months of planning, training, and research.  In the mid 1980s Doug later helped launch Sylvan’s national advertising campaign and owner’s association. Since then we have worked with thousands of students. We have grown from a small center with a staff of three, which offered two basic programs, to one that requires a staff of 18, to provide seven different programs to students of all ages. Currently we’re working with twenty-five different schools in six towns (Darien, New Canaan, Stamford, Greenwich, Norwalk, and South Salem), and we confer regularly with numerous professionals in the areas of school placement, guidance, pediatrics, speech and language, and psycho/educational services.

Summer Schedule

~ An Annual Tradition ~

We hope you will join us in celebrating our 27th year of service by considering a Sylvan Summer Program for your student’s enrichment and continued academic growth. A summer at Sylvan can be fun and educational, and classes can provide a child with a valuable head start on the next school year. As we enter our 3rd decade in Darien, once again we are pleased to offer a full range of individualized classes in the subject areas listed below.

OTHER DETAILS:

When enrolling for summer tutoring classes, it is possible to sign up for two or three sessions per week. Typically students will complete 16-20 sessions during the 8-week period. All new students and those who have not recently attended the center will need to schedule and complete diagnostic testing before June 1st. If students want to begin a summer program prior to June 27th, classes will be available during May and June, but only in the afternoons.

Current students needing extra exam prep for final exams during the week we are closed are permitted to schedule sessions by appointment only.

Summer classes fill up quickly, so it is important to return this application with a $100 deposit as soon as possible to ensure your choice of classes (the deposit will be credited against summer tuition). New families who enroll BEFORE MAY 1st will benefit by having their $50 non-refundable registration fee waived. Existing families who enroll BEFORE MAY 1st will receive a coupon for one excused absence during the summer program.
