Are There Toxins in the Toy Box? Petition to ban PVC in children’s products denied
Are toys made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) safe? No doubt many parents have heard the claim that they are not — that toxic substances can leach out of rubber duckies and other playthings as children chew and suck on them. Words on War — For KidsDad’s Activity Book Offers Children a New View on WWII
Richard Panchyk's book, World War II for Kids (Chicago Review Press, $14.95), has an excellent glossary, from the unfamiliar British slang term "ack-ack" to the more homey "victory garden", words that reflect what the author calls the "scope and breath" of the 20th century's principal conflict. Making Holiday Memories, Digitally
In most families, taking photos at the holidays is as much a tradition as baking and wrapping packages. Often, however, roles of festive film are developed mid-January and the prints disappear into albums or, more likely, shoeboxes and desk drawers. Digital cameras are changing all that. By offering instant, inexpensive images, these cameras are transforming the way families think about and enjoy the pictures they take. (read the story...)

New Contraceptive With Less Side Effects
A new oral contraceptive, recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and available by prescription, can actually improve moderate acne and help maintain clearer skin. The ORTHO TRI-CYLCLEN LO tablets are an important new birth control option because they offer a dose of hormones that contain smaller amounts of estrogen; and a progestin derivative, called norgestimate, which has been associated with low rates of such side effects as weight gain, acne and facial hair growth. The symbol of hands
The human hand is a symbol for many things, not the least of which are unity and support. You're On! Inc., a Fort Worth-based company, understands the importance of such symbolism to today's world, and has recently announced the release of the first four in a new line of child-friendly toys called People Holding Hands. Seat belt or booster seat? The 5-Step Test
I recently completed an 8-hour Car Seat Inspector Training course — and learned that, even though your child may seem old enough for just a seat belt, it often isn't a safe idea. I was surprised to find my 7-year-old daughter still needs a booster seat even though she's tall for her age. (read the story...)
