ATELIER CONSTANTIN POPESCU is the place for people who seek the highest quality violin family musical instruments. Since the studio opened in 1994, proprietor and professional musician Constantin Popescu has made it his mission to create a first-rate source that sells, rents and repairs fine stringed instruments. The sounds produced from these instruments are fit for concert halls. The company has two locations:
Atelier Constantin Popescu and The Riverside School of Music are located in a stunning, light-filled space at 401-403 E. Putnam Avenue in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich. The second store/workshop is in historic Westport, conveniently located near Exit 17, off I-95.
In Greenwich, children can watch instruments being repaired by Sebastian Schwelm, a practicing luthier (craftsman of stringed instruments). World-renowned musicians and organizations like The Juilliard School entrust their instruments to Atelier.
The Riverside School of Music is located next to our Greenwich store, and the faculty includes some of the area’s top performers and music educators. Studies have shown that music helps foster brain development in infants and young children, and children who play an instrument score higher on standardized tests and typically have higher grades in math. The Riverside School of Music offers private lessons for violin, viola, cello and bass, from the Suzuki method for beginners to advanced levels. The School also offers piano lessons, music theory, chamber music lessons and adult lessons. Some Riverside students have gone on to study at such prestigious schools as Juilliard, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Orchestra.
At Atelier, we import most of our instruments and bows. We have developed specific lines of quality student instruments with several makers in Germany, the Czech Republic and Romania.
Our brand names are proprietary and are carried only in our stores. They offer outstanding workmanship and sound, and represent the best value, because quality instruments are easier and more rewarding to play! They come in sizes from 1/32 to 4/4, so children can rent fine quality instruments at a reasonable price, and for advanced students and professionals, we have a generous selection of new and old maestro-quality instruments.
SALES – Any instrument purchased from Atelier can be used as a trade-in toward the purchase of another instrument, and up to 100% of the purchase price can be applied to the new acquisition, depending on the condition of the returned instrument. We offer a large selection of the highest quality traditional accessories, along with many innovative new products. We can special order any accessories for you.
RENTAL PROGRAM – Our program is designed with students of all ages and levels in mind. All our rental instruments are of the highest quality. Each instrument is expertly adjusted and in top playing condition. Additional adjustments can be made upon request. Our “rental with-purchase option” program offers the option to apply some rental fees toward the purchase of any of our instruments. A 10% discount off the initial price will be applied if the rental instrument is purchased within the first 6 months of the rental period. We offer trade up from size to size at any time.
REPAIRS & RESTORATIONS – All repairs and restorations are performed in our shop by Constantin Popescu and our luthiers. No work is sent out to subcontractors.
BOW REHAIRING & RESTORATION – All work is performed by Constantin and Sebastian, using only the highest quality horse hair and replacement parts.
PURCHASE OF INSTRUMENTS – Our shop is always seeking quality and rare violin family instruments and bows. If you have an instrument or bow you wish to sell, you have two options; to trade it in for one of our instruments or to sell it directly to us for immediate cash.
CONSIGNMENTS – We accept special and rare instruments and bows on consignment. All repairs must be performed and paid before we can present the item to the potential buyers. Our commission is 30% of the selling price.
APPRAISALS – An appraisal is a document that gives a description of the instrument or bow, and gives an expert’s opinion of its fair replacement value. These documents are accepted by insurance companies as evidence of value, but not as proof of ownership. Instruments and bows are appraised for a flat fee, and never for a percentage of their value. Our fee is $75 for a verbal appraisal, $200 for a written document. Written updates are $75. Appraisals are provided gratis whenever an instrument is purchased in our store.
In our stores, we offer personal attention to the individual customer who expects only thevery best. This is why we prefer to meet with each customer by appointment. However, walk-ins are welcome in our Greenwich store, where we have more staff to help you.
