 “Acting, Voice and Musical Theater Workshop”

Smithtown Performing Arts Council once again brings you our Acting, Voice and Musical Theatre Workshop classes. Classes run throughout the year. The objective of each class is to give the student a creative, collaborative atmosphere that fosters their self-esteem and communication skills. As always our programs are designed to give all students, novices and seasoned performers alike, the opportunity to participate in the theater experience.

Musical Theatre Workshop

In the spirit of our Summer Musical Theatre Intensive Summer Camp, this class will focus on large group numbers employing dance, movement, and harmonization. Songs selected will be in a variety of styles, allowing students to explore different types of vocalization and choreography. Numbers presented in the showcase will be fully choreographed and staged. Performances may include minimal solo opportunities, but the emphasis will be on group work.

Unlike years past, we are breaking out our most popular class, Musical Theatre Workshop, into two 12 week sessions that will require attendance twice a week (Tuesday AND Thursday) for an hour and a half each. This format will allow the participants to have a more consistent and rewarding experience.

Fall Session:

Class Schedule

Registration Forms

On Fridays and Saturdays we will offer our Acting/Improv Classes and Voice Classes. All of these classes will have a more refined age group classification allowing us to explore activities that are more specifically tailored to each age group. We will also offer a combination Voice and Movement class for the 1st-4th grade participants and a graduated Scene Study class for the 9th- 12th grade aprticipants.

Acting/Improv

Offered Friday or Saturday  Grades 1st – 4th or 5th – 8th  Cost: $300
Using a variety of exercises and activities, students will explore foundational principles and techniques employed by stage actors. Concepts covered will include teamwork, character development, using movement to tell a story, vocal projection and articulation, stage directions, listening and reacting in a scene, and motivation behind actors. In the second half of the year, this knowledge will be applied in scene and/or monologue work, which will be presented at the final showcase.

Voice for MT

Offered Friday or Saturday  Grades 5th – 8th or 9th – 12th  Cost: $300
Voice classes will concentrate on healthy vocal technique, audition preparation and performance, creating a character and telling a story through song. Students will leave the class with sheet music and preparation for a variety of song cuts that can be used for musical theater auditions. The final showcase will include solo, duet and group performances. The focus of these performances will be on vocal technique, conveying character and story, and group harmonization. Any staging (blocking/choreography) of musical numbers presented by this class will be minimal.

Scene Study

Offered Friday or Saturday  Grades 9th  – 12th  Cost: $300
This advanced course is meant for students who are serous about improving their performance quality. It combines basic principles of actor training with more advance techniques. Scene Study coursework includes reading dramatic texts and looking closely for dramatic clues that will allow students to make strong acting choices. Students will also receive feedback from the instructor, helping them rehearse productively and relate to their fellow actors. Students will participate in warm-ups, improvisation, and various acting exercises in a friendly but formal setting. Students will explore, experience and enjoy a variety of scenes from popular dramatic texts, culminating in a showcase performance.

Broadway Songs

Offered Friday or Saturday  Grades: 1st  – 4th  Cost: $300
Classes will focus on healthy vocal technique, audition preparation and performance, conveying emotion and meaning through song, and basic movement/choreography. Students will leave this class with sheet music and preparation for a variety of song cuts that can be used for musical theater auditions. The final showcase will include opportunities for solo and group singing. Students will learn a variety of dance steps commonly employed in musical theater, which will be utilized in the staging of their showcase numbers.

Our Theatre for Kids Productions provides our young aspiring performers the opportunity to wow and learn at the same time. The shows are selected to entertain adults and kids alike. The fully staged musicals have been a staple in our schedule for the last 8 years.

Inspired by the classic film. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, a Live Radio Play in a return engagement. We a continuing a Smithtown Holiday Tradition for our third year! Six Actors perform the dozens of characters as well as produce the sound effects. All the magic of Bedford Falls comes to exhilarating life right in front of you as you are transported to 1940 and then to George Bailey’s Christmas Eve.

The fee to rent the party room is $100 for one hour following the show. There is no minimum number to hold a party. However, the maximum amount of comfortable seating for kids is 20.

For all Youth Productions tickets will be $15 for a birthday party. (Little Mermaid is a mainstage show, therefore tickets will be $20 each for a birthday party.)

Everyone seeing the show must have a ticket.

We will be happy to assist you with all the food, cake, drinks, or any other party materials such as but not limited to: tablecloths, napkins, plates, bowls, cups, utensils, candles or matches. Pricing will be subject to your party requests.

You may bring balloons and/or decorations for the party room. The room will be set up for your party after intermission.

Musical Theater Education Program Summer Camp

Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts’ Theatre Education Program Summer Theatre Enhancement is an intensive theatre-training program. It is designed to give all students, novices and seasoned performers alike, the opportunity to participate in the theatre experience. While we would like to think all participants would become active theatre participants, the goals of each session are to give the student a creative, collaborative atmosphere that fosters their self-esteem and communication skills.
