Description: Celebrate Earth Day outdoors with live performances, a green-vehicle runway show and exhibition, activities for kids, and exhibits by environmental campaigns, green businesses, and local food vendors.

The event is free and open to the public so come out to learn how you can green your own life and help make New York a more sustainable city.

Venue Description: Union Square is a popular intersection in New York City, with the Flatiron District to the north, Chelsea to the west, Greenwich Village to the south and the East Village to the east. Originally a potters? field, Union Square became a public commons for the city in 1815 and was later expanded. An equestrian statue of George Washington and a temperance fountain were added to the area at that time. In the early 1800s, upscale townhouses and local theaters thrived in Union Square, and by the mid-1800s factories and offices replaced the residences. By the 1920s, labor activists used Union Square as an area of protest, and riots and rallies were common in the area. Known historically for political demonstrations and a place for radicals to make speeches, in 1861 Union Square was the site of a patriotic rally of a quarter of a million people. Today, both residents and tourists are drawn to Union Square for its quaint neighbor park, popular restaurants, and upscale shops. Several New York University dormitories and many New School buildings are located near the square, drawing a younger crowd to the area. Blue Water Grill, one of the many restaurants in the neighborhood, draws seafood lovers with its classic menu, while the Tosler Davis beauty salon is a well-known spot to relax. The Union Square Greenmarket takes place in the area, with bountiful items like homegrown produce, meats, cheeses, and jams. People have the chance to meet the local farmers and bakers at this organic market. At the annual Union Square Holiday Market, held November 23-December 24, kiosks are filled by over 100 artisans selling wares ranging from candles and perfume to knitted scarves and high-end jewelry.
