The NYMetroParents blogroll features the best blogs in the parenting world, from New York and beyond. Here's a closer look at why we love these mom bloggers and dad bloggers and how they're shaping the web for parenting today.
Blogging From: New York, New York
It might look a little retro-chic when it comes to graphics, but Mom-101 is as current and up-to-trend in the mom blog world. Founder Liz Gumbinner lays it all out there for readers in her adorable heading, “I Don’t Know What I’m Doing Either.” Go ahead, let out a sigh. Finally someone understands the whole “babies don’t come with manuals” plight parents must face. Now rest assured you’re not the only ones without a clue. Gumbinner is a definite mom and woman-of-all-trades, bringing comic relief and varied perspective to the blog all with her singular voice.
There is a certain quirkiness in her writing, even titling a section of entries, “Posts Some People Besides My Mom Seem To Like.” Her surging posts range from the sweet neuroticism of picking the right photo for birth announcement cards to issues of “hipster” parenting styles. Her writing connects to the heart, whether it be in a humorous tone or in a love letter to her first daughter; it’s a rarity to feel so gripped by another’s feelings, and that’s just what Mom-101 accomplishes.
One of the most reassuring feelings readers get from Mom-101 is comfort that no one may know what they’re “doing either,” but just by being a mom, being there for your kids and learning each day, you sort of just figure it out. It’s evident in the posts that Mom-101 is a great mother, and that quality is not something you have to be born with; it comes with experience, trust and love. That’s something every parent can commit to.
Mom-101 is the ideal blend of sap and sass and a great resource for the “mommunity.” -- Melanie Baker
