Join our welcoming and supportive Jewish community here at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue located in the heart of the Upper West Side. SWFS is a beacon of progressive Jewish thought, inclusive worship, and committed social action for our congregants, our neighbors, and the larger community. We manifest the central Jewish ideal of repairing the world through such programs as our onsite Men’s Shelter and Emergency Food Program. The synagogue embraces the central Jewish value espoused by its founder, Stephen Wise, to support the State of Israel and further the unity of the Jewish people worldwide.
Stephen Wise Free Synagogue Religious School offers Religious Education and social opportunities for children ages 5-18. Students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder can also participate in the learning with our KULANU class. Kulanu, which means “all of us,” is designed to invite and engage students with ASD and their families. The class curriculum enables children to participate in home and synagogue celebrations and to gain knowledge of and comfort with Jewish identity. Ultimately, we hope that all participants will celebrate Bar or Bat Mitzvah with our congregation. This class incorporates behavioral principles including visual supports and positive reinforcement. We use music, arts, and cooking as tools for on-hands learning. Our larger Religious School population also interacts with our Kulanu students on a regular basis by participating in class prayer sessions and holiday celebrations. Classes are held on Sunday mornings for ages 6-8 and 9-11.
We here at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue are all on a journey towards lives that are actively engages with our congregation and the Jewish people. Our synagogue Religious School provides a solid foundation for both children and parents as they explore their Jewish identity. We stress the importance of building a supportive learning community for students, teachers, and families. We offer many opportunities for families to join together for Jewish learning and Jewish experiences.
