Description: This exhibition of work by famed pop artist Peter Max juxtaposes portfolios of his mostly black-and-white drawings on paper against many of his larger and more color-saturated works in a variety of media. This showing is the first in-depth look at Maxs original drawings. Covering a wide range of subjects portraits of friends and political figures, ocean sunsets and undulating landscapes, characters from Disney and The Wizard of Oz, planetary and celestial bodies in space, angels and demons, flowers and hearts, as well as Mona Lisas and Statues of Liberty to name only a few these never-before-seen drawings comprise one of the most recognizable and commercially successful artistic practices of our times. The exhibit runs through February 23, 2014.
Venue Description: Spanning 145 acres, the Nassau County Museum of Art is one of the largest suburban fine arts museums in the country. The museum includes formal gardens, outdoor sculptures, the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building, and the Art Space for Children. The Saltzman museum is housed in a Georgian mansion designed by Ogden Codman Jr., and features mainly 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century works, including internationally acclaimed and local artists. Its permanent collection includes the likes of Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, and Roy Lichtenstein.
The Art Space for Children, housed in a separate building, features changing exhibitions of topics and material of interest to children. Family Sundays, free with admission, offer a day of hands-on art activities and gallery. Art classes are available for all ages and a special summer program is put on in July and August. Once outside the museum's walls, visitors can explore vast gardens designed by Marian Coffin, considered some of her finest. The gardens include specialty sections devoted solely to roses or azaleas, as well as fountains, shrubs, and walkways. The Sculpture Garden has 40 sculptures that interact with the natural environment.
