Masquerade: False Faces, October 31- Nov. 4, 2009, an exhibition and event organized by The Urban Individualists, an international artists collective. Masquerade: False Faces, is a multimedia exhibition which includes masks and other art works by artists responding to symbolic and concrete uses of masks related to carnival, ceremonial, spiritual, and other societal appearances of "masking". The exhibition will examine the mask as a wearable work of art, as a means of hiding or changing the identity of a person, as a protective device, literal and metaphoric meanings of "masking" in contemporary culture.

Historically, mask-makers have shown great resourcefulness in selecting and combining a wide array of materials. Artists in this exhibition also incorporate familiar and unexpected materials in their works. Elements of Abstraction presents audiences with a rich kaleidoscope of color, form, and texture that in conjunction breathes life into abstract artworks. Whether employing shimmering brushstrokes or bold fields of color, nonrepresentational art, with its lack of familiar forms, allows the work speak to us on an especially elemental level. Through their deeply personal forms of expression, these artists offer a stunning glimpse into contemporary abstract painting. Portals of Perception bridges the wide expanse of artistic possibilities, gathering together impressionist, realist, and abstract paintings. What we find, surprisingly, is not the differences but the similarities as these talented artists vocalize the inspirations of places, people, and feelings. NY See the Foliage! Tour - On Board Tours

Now in its second year, OnBoard Tours' NY See the Foliage! Tour allows sight-seers to experience the full splendor of a New York autumn through a four-hour intimate tour of the Hudson Valley. The tour leaves Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge and begins down the scenic New Jersey Palisades Parkway, stopping at the quaint Lookout Inn refreshment stand for a spectacular view of the New York City skyline in full autumn colors. The tour continues north past Bear Mountain Bridge, the first bridge built across the Hudson River, through Bear Mountain State Park, and past Fort Montgomery. The last stop on the tour is a 45-minute layover in Highland Falls, NY, just outside of West Point, where passengers can explore and take a light meal. The tour guide accompanies passengers when they leave the bus, and is always available to answer questions. Two departure times: 9am and 1:30pm.

Japanese Mandalas: Emanations and Avatars - Metropolitan Museum of Art

The introduction of esoteric Buddhism to Japan from mainland China in the ninth-century forever changed the visual landscape of Japanese religion and of Japanese art as a whole. The rituals of Mikkyo Buddhism, or the "Secret Teachings" as the newly imported doctrine was called, involve a preponderance of arrestingly beautiful and fearsome images that aim to reveal ultimate truths to the initiated. At the core of Mikkyo is the Mandala of Both Realms, paired cosmic diagrams of the Diamond World and the Matrix World. The installation explores the art of Mikkyo Buddhism from the models used to create these mandalas to the images they inspired. Important early iconographic drawings, paintings, sculpture, and textiles from the Metropolitan's permanent collection are displayed with outstanding works from other institutions and private collections.

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's historic voyage to Manhattan from Amsterdam, that city's Rijksmuseum sends perhaps the most admired painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) to the Met. Closed Mon. $20.

Watteau, Music, and Theater - Metropolitan Museum of Art

The exhibition will explore the place of music and theater in the work of the great early eighteenth-century French painter and draftsman Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), comparing an imagery of power, associated with the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, with a more optimistic and mildly subversive imagery of pleasure, developed in contemporary opera-ballet and theater. It will show that the painter's utopian vision was directly influenced by these sister arts and will shed light on the subjects of a number of Watteau's images. In addition to material drawn from various departments of the Museum, including musical instruments, porcelains, and prints, there will be a number of major loans of paintings and drawings by Watteau and his contemporaries from other collections in the United States and Europe.

DESCRIPTION: Each class will consist of Body and Foot technique, followed by "choreography" snippets of Palos typically danced in Tablao. The "choreography" portion will specifically focus on clarifying structural elements of each palo (i.e., llamada, letra, falseta, remate, etc.) and understanding how to communicate and have the necessary control when dancing with musicians.

Rebeca Tomás began her dance training in Granada, Spain, later moving to Madrid, where she trained at the internationally renowned Flamenco Academy, Amor de Dios. While in Spain, she appeared at tablaos such as Las Carboneras, Al Andalus, and el Juglar. In the U.S., Rebeca performs and tours with numerous Flamenco dance companies, including Edwin Aparicio Flamenco Company, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, and Jorge Navarro¹s Pasión Flamenca. In spring 2008, she received a grant from the Jerome Foundation to travel to Sevilla and deepen her studies in Bata de Cola technique. Also in 2008, she received a scholarship to attend Jacob's Pillow Summer Intensive. There, the distinguished flamenco company Noche Flamenca and Soledad Barrio invited her to join the company, with whom she has continued to dance and tour internationally.

On this tour, we visit the Brooklyn Brewery and sample all the beers on tap, and then we explore the heart of the old Brewers Row in the eastern part of Williamsburg, once a German-speaking community known for its brewhouses and beer gardens. We check out a few of the last remaining brewery buildings and a beautiful church from the 19th century; talk about what happened to the local brewing industry; explore the diverse cultures and mom and pop businesses that make the neighborhood what it is today; and discover how beer brewing has returned to Brooklyn. Along the way, we visit a couple of restaurants and merchants, hear the stories of residents past and present, and, of course, have a taste of some of the finest food and beer Brooklyn has to offer today.

Study with a true master! JOSE MORENO, dancer/percussionist/singer, is the son of famous flamenco artists Estrella Morena and Pepe de Malaga. Mr. Moreno began studying flamenco dance with his mother at age 6. He later studied with Manolete, Andres Marin, and Farruquito. He learned percussion – especially cajon – under the tutellage of Manuel Soler. Performing professionally since he was 14, Mr. Moreno has appeared with dancers Manolete, La Tania, Pastora Galvan, Antonio Granjero, Joaquin Ruiz; singers Jesus Montoya, Joni Cortes; guitarists Pedro Cortes, Basilio Garcia, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Roberto Castellon, Jose Cortes (Pansequito); and in concert with Isabel Pantoja. He has performed with the companies Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, Duende Ballet Espanol, Bailes Ferrer Flamenco Music and Dance, and Jesus and Suaya Montoya Company.
